Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

🍽️Family dinners

A Bulgarian family dinner — a Коледа (Christmas) gathering, a name day celebration, or a Sunday family lunch with multiple relatives talking at once.

🎉Social gatherings and parties

A birthday party or garden gathering in spring where friends and family catch up freely and the conversation overlaps.

Friend catch-ups

A catch-up with old friends over banitsa and rakia, with rapid conversation moving between personal news, family updates, and current events.

🌍Multilingual groups

A community gathering at a chitalishte (community centre), church, or neighbourhood committee where announcements are made and everyone responds.

👥Community and club meetings

Three generations at a family table — grandparents in an Eastern or regional dialect, parents in standard Sofia Bulgarian, grandchildren mixing in English or German.

🏠Shared living situations

A casual evening at a Bulgarian mehana, a friend's home, or a neighbourhood gathering where small groups form and conversations flow freely.

Why Captio AI

Built to keep you in the conversation, not just in the room

Captions whoever is speaking

Captio AI follows the dominant voice at any moment — whoever is loudest in the microphone's direction. In a group conversation, this tracks the active speaker naturally.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, living rooms, parties, outdoor gatherings. Moderate background noise does not prevent accurate captions — Captio AI is built for real environments, not quiet rooms.

Place it in the centre and forget it

Put the phone on the table or in the middle of the group, microphone facing the conversation. No positioning it after every speaker change, no adjusting between voices.

Less effort, less fatigue

The cognitive load of following a group conversation by lip-reading and reconstructing speech is exhausting. Captio AI handles the following so you can direct your energy toward actually being in the conversation.

60+ languages

For multilingual families, mixed-language social groups, or gatherings where people switch between languages mid-conversation. No setup required between language changes.

No setup between conversations

Open the app and place the phone. No configuration per setting, no briefing the group, nothing to manage between conversations. It works for any group, in any situation.

Bulgarian

Why Bulgarian is hard to understand

Hard-soft consonant pairs

  • Palatalized and non-palatalized consonants look identical
  • Bulgarian has phonemic palatalization: many consonants have both a hard (non-palatalized) and a soft (palatalized) form that produce different words. This distinction is produced by raising the tongue toward the palate — a movement entirely invisible from outside the mouth. At a family dinner, hard-soft minimal pairs are visually identical in every position.

Eastern-Western vowel split

  • Eastern and Western Bulgarian use different vowels for the same words
  • Eastern Bulgarian and Western Bulgarian (the basis for the standard Sofia variety) differ in how they pronounce the Old Bulgarian yat vowel. In some Eastern contexts it is /ya/ or /e/ depending on stress; in the Western standard it is consistently /e/. At a gathering mixing family from Sofia and from Varna or Burgas, the same word sounds different from opposite ends of the table.

Schwa vowel ъ

  • The back unrounded vowel produces no visible lip movement
  • Bulgarian has the back unrounded vowel /ɤ/ (written as ъ), which appears in many common words. This vowel is produced without any lip rounding or distinctive jaw position — it is purely a matter of tongue backness. At a family gathering, words containing ъ are visually identical to words with other central or back vowels.

Vowel reduction in fast speech

  • Unstressed vowels shift toward central values in natural conversation
  • Unstressed Bulgarian vowels shorten and centralize in fast speech, diverging from the careful vowel qualities of formal or careful pronunciation. Family dinner speech runs at this reduced register exclusively. A deaf person who has trained on careful Bulgarian encounters shifted vowel patterns in animated social conversation.

Bulgarian-Turkish code-switching

  • Gatherings in Rhodope and northeastern regions mix two languages
  • In regions with significant Turkish-speaking communities — the Rhodope mountains, northeastern Bulgaria — Bulgarian and Turkish alternate in social gatherings. A deaf person faces two phonologically unrelated languages: Bulgarian's Slavic consonant system and Turkish's uvular and agglutinative phonology, switching mid-conversation without predictable pattern.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Bulgaria: the scale of daily exclusion

The Union of the Deaf in Bulgaria, which has operated since the post-war period, has approximately 6,500 members organised across 12 regional organisations in cities including Sofia, Plovdiv, Varna, Burgas, Pleven, and Haskovo, with 42 territorial organisations subordinated to them. The Union maintains Bulgaria's only Centre for Rehabilitation of Hearing and Speech for children up to three years of age, with offices in Sofia, Varna, Pleven, and Haskovo — reflecting the geographic unevenness of access to early intervention services. The Global Burden of Disease 2019 study estimated that hearing loss is the most prevalent cause of years lived with disability across Eastern Europe, with age-standardised prevalence rising steadily over the past three decades as populations age.

Bulgaria's post-1989 economic transition created severe pressures on disability services that were slow to recover. A Scandinavian disability research institute report documented that people with disabilities in Bulgaria experienced significant reductions in social protection and services during the transition period, with institutional care remaining the primary model and community-based services underdeveloped. For deaf and hard-of-hearing Bulgarians, the gap between the Union's advocacy and the lived reality of daily social access is wide: sign language interpretation is available for formal institutional contexts but is absent from family gatherings, community chitalishte events, and the informal social settings where exclusion is most keenly felt.

Captio AI captions Bulgarian conversation in real time on a phone screen — so a deaf family member at a Коледа dinner or a multigenerational gathering in Sofia, Plovdiv, or Varna can follow every story and toast as it is spoken, across whichever Bulgarian variety or mix of languages is at the table.
