Why Lithuanian is hard to understand
Pitch accent
- Two tones, zero lip movement
- Lithuanian carries two prosodic intonations — acute and circumflex — on long vowels and diphthongs. These pitch patterns change word meaning but are produced entirely in the larynx, invisible on the lips. At a family dinner, distinguishing tone pairs by sight alone is impossible.
Deep palatalization
- Soft consonants disappear on lips
- Lithuanian has 45 phonemes — 32 basic consonants each with a palatalized counterpart. Pairs like /p/ vs /pʲ/ or /t/ vs /tʲ/ are produced by the tongue pressing the palate, hidden entirely behind closed lips. Sounds that are audibly distinct look identical on the face.
Žemaitian gap
- A dialect that reads like a different language
- Samogitian (Žemaitian), spoken by roughly half a million people in northwestern Lithuania, diverges so far from standard Lithuanian in phonology and vocabulary that it is sometimes classified as a separate language. At a gathering with Samogitian relatives, the lip shapes do not match the standard Lithuanian a deaf person has learned.

- In natural Lithuanian conversation, unstressed vowels reduce or disappear and word boundaries blur. Common phrases contract so aggressively that the resulting lip pattern no longer matches the underlying words.
