Why Bosnian is hard to understand
4-way pitch accent
- Tone contrasts invisible on the lips
- Like Serbian and Croatian, Bosnian has four prosodic patterns — short/long combined with rising/falling pitch. These contrasts carry meaning but are produced entirely in the larynx. At a family dinner, 'grȁd' (city) and 'grâd' (hail) look identical on the face.
Ijekavian yat reflex
- Words look different depending on the speaker's origin
- Standard Bosnian uses the Ijekavian reflex of Old Slavic *jat* — 'rijeka' instead of 'reka', 'lijepo' instead of 'lepo'. At a gathering with mixed Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian guests, the same concept arrives with completely different initial lip shapes, creating an unpredictable visual stream.
Turkish-Arabic loanwords
- A second phonological layer in Bosniak speech
- Bosnian has absorbed a significant layer of Ottoman Turkish and Arabic vocabulary used alongside South Slavic equivalents. In Muslim Bosniak communities, these insertions — terms for greetings, social occasions, religious moments — introduce phonological patterns that the deaf lip-reader did not encounter in standard classroom Bosnian.

- Bosnia sits at the intersection of Shtokavian varieties from Herzegovina, the Krajina region, and the diaspora in Germany and Austria. A study of deaf and hard-of-hearing people in Bosnia and Herzegovina documented 1,044 individuals registered through formal channels — 455 through employment offices and 589 through social care centres receiving financial aid. This formal count almost certainly undercounts the real population significantly: applying WHO and GBD 2019 prevalence rates to Bosnia's population of approximately 3.5 million suggests somewhere between 500,000 and 700,000 Bosnians live with some degree of hearing difficulty.
The social dimension of hearing loss in Bosnia is compounded by systemic exclusion. Since most deaf people are born to hearing parents, and very few hearing parents learn to sign, many deaf children grow up isolated from their own families. Research from deaf advocacy groups documents decisions made about deaf people without their input, laws historically restricting deaf people in social and legal contexts, and education systems that prioritised spoken language over sign language — often without interpretation support.
