Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

🍽️Family dinners

A New Year's (Noviy God) celebration where the whole family gathers around the table for hours — toasts, stories, arguments, laughter, everyone at full speed. Captio AI captions every voice so you follow every moment of the evening.

🎉Social gatherings and parties

A weekend at the dacha where multiple generations share a kitchen and conversations happen across rooms and at the dinner table simultaneously. Captio AI keeps you in every exchange.

Friend catch-ups

A birthday dinner (den' rozhdeniya) where toasts are made, guests contribute one after another, and fast Russian fills the room. Captio AI captions each speaker so you follow without missing a word.

🌍Multilingual groups

A gathering of friends in someone's kitchen — the most central social setting in Russian culture — where the conversation is fast, informal, and unrepeated for anyone who didn't catch it. Captio AI gives you the text in real time.

👥Community and club meetings

A neighbourhood committee or housing cooperative meeting where multiple residents speak quickly with no formal structure and no captioning. Captio AI captions each contributor.

🏠Shared living situations

A multigenerational family gathering where grandparents speak with a regional accent and younger family members mix in English. Captio AI follows both.

Why Captio AI

Built to keep you in the conversation, not just in the room

Captions whoever is speaking

Captio AI follows the dominant voice at any moment — whoever is loudest in the microphone's direction. In a group conversation, this tracks the active speaker naturally.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, living rooms, parties, outdoor gatherings. Moderate background noise does not prevent accurate captions — Captio AI is built for real environments, not quiet rooms.

Place it in the centre and forget it

Put the phone on the table or in the middle of the group, microphone facing the conversation. No positioning it after every speaker change, no adjusting between voices.

Less effort, less fatigue

The cognitive load of following a group conversation by lip-reading and reconstructing speech is exhausting. Captio AI handles the following so you can direct your energy toward actually being in the conversation.

60+ languages

For multilingual families, mixed-language social groups, or gatherings where people switch between languages mid-conversation. No setup required between language changes.

No setup between conversations

Open the app and place the phone. No configuration per setting, no briefing the group, nothing to manage between conversations. It works for any group, in any situation.

Russian

Why Russian is hard to understand

Vowel reduction (akanie)

  • Unstressed Russian vowels reduce to near-silence in fast casual speech
  • Russian has a systematic reduction rule called akanie: unstressed /o/ shifts toward /a/ in Moscow-standard speech, and in fast casual conversation, unstressed syllables reduce further — to near-schwa or are barely produced. The word 'хорошо' (khorosho, 'fine') in careful speech has three distinct vowels; in fast speech it becomes something close to 'хршо'. These reductions are not visible on the lips and are not recoverable from visual information alone at a family gathering.

Consonant cluster compression

  • Russian consonant clusters simplify in casual speech in ways that obscure word identity
  • Russian is notable for its consonant clusters, which simplify dramatically in casual speech. 'Здравствуйте' (hello, formal) becomes 'здрасьте' or simply 'здрасть' in informal greeting. The formal written form and the spoken colloquial form are phonologically distant. The colloquial form is what is used at every family dinner, dacha weekend, and birthday gathering — and a deaf person prepared for the formal word encounters a different mouth shape in the living room.

Palatalization pairs

  • Hard and soft consonants distinguish word meaning but are invisible on the lips
  • Russian distinguishes hard and soft (palatalized) consonants — т/ть, д/дь, н/нь, л/ль — a distinction that changes word meaning and grammatical function throughout the lexicon. Palatalization is produced at the back of the mouth: the front articulators that a lip-reader tracks do not move differently for a hard versus soft consonant. In fast group conversation, a deaf person cannot recover this distinction from visual information alone.

Regional accent variation

  • Moscow, St. Petersburg, Siberian, and Southern Russian carry distinct phonological patterns
  • Standard Moscow Russian differs from St. Petersburg speech (where unstressed /o/ is preserved — okanye — rather than reduced), Siberian varieties, and Southern Russian with Cossack-influenced prosody. A gathering where family members come from different Russian regions presents multiple phonological systems — and for a deaf person, the calibration built for one regional variety does not transfer to another.

Russian-English mixing

  • Educated urban Russian social gatherings mix Russian and English mid-sentence
  • In Moscow, St. Petersburg, and educated Russian social circles, English vocabulary appears regularly in casual conversation: 'Да, я буду на meeting в пятницу, ты придёшь?' The switch is common enough in urban social settings to be background noise — and for a deaf person tracking Russian, the English segment is an unannounced phonological shift that breaks the visual comprehension chain.

The Challenge

22% of Russian adults report hearing trouble. Only 2% use a hearing aid.

A national survey on hearing aid use in Russian adults, published in PMC (2023), found that 22.2% of the Russian population reported some degree of hearing trouble — while only 2.2% reported using hearing aids. This gap between the number who experience hearing difficulty and the number using any assistive technology reflects both under-diagnosis and barriers to treatment access in Russia's healthcare system. An estimated 8.7 million deaf and hard of hearing people live in Russia and neighbouring Central Asian countries, navigating daily social life without formal support.

Russia signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2012 and has federal law providing formal disability protections. In practice, advocacy groups and researchers have documented that these protections remain vague and inconsistently enforced — deaf people face barriers in accessing education, healthcare, and employment. Russian Sign Language has limited official recognition, and interpreter provision in everyday social settings is absent. The New Year feast (Noviy God), the birthday gathering, and the dacha weekend — the most central social occasions in Russian family life — have no formal support structure for deaf or hard of hearing participants.

Captio AI captions Russian in real time — across Moscow, St. Petersburg, and Siberian varieties, including the fast casual speech of kitchen-table gatherings and dacha weekends — so a deaf Russian-speaking person can follow every toast, every story, and every conversation at the family table without the exhaustion of sustained lip-reading.
