Why Marathi is hard to understand
Four-way stop contrast
- Marathi has 38 consonants including aspirated pairs invisible on the lips
- Marathi has a four-way stop consonant contrast: voiceless unaspirated, voiceless aspirated, voiced unaspirated, and voiced aspirated (breathy). This gives Marathi 16 stop consonants where aspiration changes word meaning throughout the lexicon. In fast casual speech at a social gathering, aspiration reduces and the voiced/voiceless distinction weakens. A deaf person cannot distinguish aspirated from unaspirated stops from lip movement — a distinction that changes meaning across common everyday words.
Regional dialect variation
- Varhadi, Konkan, and Pune Marathi sound substantially different at the family table
- Marathi has regional varieties including Varhadi (Vidarbha), Konkan Marathi (coastal Maharashtra), and the standard Pune variety, with dialects at borders incorporating features from Kannada, Telugu, and Konkani. A family gathering in Mumbai or Pune with relatives from Nagpur (Varhadi region) and Ratnagiri (coastal) brings multiple phonological systems at the same table. A deaf person calibrated to Pune standard Marathi faces a different phonological environment when a Varhadi-speaking relative joins the conversation.
Marathi-Hindi-English trilingualism
- Mumbai gatherings move between three languages in the same sentence
- In Mumbai — where Hindi, Marathi, and English coexist in everyday life — social conversations move freely between all three: 'Aaj maze friend yetil, he's coming from Pune, toh baghuyat.' Each switch changes the phonological system entirely without announcement, and the Hindi or English segments typically carry specific content. A deaf person tracking Marathi loses the thread when either of the other two languages appears.
Dental vs retroflex stops
- Marathi distinguishes dental and retroflex stops — invisible on the lips
- Marathi distinguishes dental stops (त थ द ध, tongue at teeth) from retroflex stops (ट ठ ड ढ, tongue curled back). This distinction changes meaning in common Marathi words but is entirely positional — the visible lip and jaw movement for a dental and retroflex stop is identical. In fast group conversation, a deaf person lip-reading Marathi cannot access a contrast that is critical to basic comprehension.
Fast casual Marathi with register drop

- Marathi has a formal register used in education and media, and a fast colloquial register at social gatherings that drops honorifics, contracts words, and uses slang absent from formal resources. 'तू' (tu, informal you) instead of 'आपण' (aapan, formal), contracted verb forms, and social-group-specific slang all contribute to a speech environment that a deaf person trained on formal Marathi has not been prepared to lip-read.
