Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

🍽️Family dinners

In Serbia, a slava — the family patron saint's day celebration — gathers multiple generations around one table, with overlapping conversations in toasts, stories, and jokes that run for hours.

🎉Social gatherings and parties

Friend groups at a kafana (traditional Serbian tavern) stretch across long tables where conversations flow freely, everyone speaking at once over food and music.

Friend catch-ups

Meeting old friends over burek and coffee in a local bakery, catching up on news and family gossip without any formality — the conversations that matter most in Serbian social life.

🌍Multilingual groups

Neighbourhood gatherings or local community council meetings where multiple people speak at once, interruptions are normal, and decisions are made loudly.

👥Community and club meetings

A Sunday family lunch (rucak) where grandparents, parents, and children all eat together, switching between stories, laughter, and arguments across three generations.

🏠Shared living situations

Late-afternoon sitting on a terrace with neighbours and friends — the kind of unplanned social gathering that starts at four and runs well into the evening.

Why Captio AI

Built to keep you in the conversation, not just in the room

Captions whoever is speaking

Captio AI follows the dominant voice at any moment — whoever is loudest in the microphone's direction. In a group conversation, this tracks the active speaker naturally.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, living rooms, parties, outdoor gatherings. Moderate background noise does not prevent accurate captions — Captio AI is built for real environments, not quiet rooms.

Place it in the centre and forget it

Put the phone on the table or in the middle of the group, microphone facing the conversation. No positioning it after every speaker change, no adjusting between voices.

Less effort, less fatigue

The cognitive load of following a group conversation by lip-reading and reconstructing speech is exhausting. Captio AI handles the following so you can direct your energy toward actually being in the conversation.

60+ languages

For multilingual families, mixed-language social groups, or gatherings where people switch between languages mid-conversation. No setup required between language changes.

No setup between conversations

Open the app and place the phone. No configuration per setting, no briefing the group, nothing to manage between conversations. It works for any group, in any situation.

Serbian

Why Serbian is hard to understand

Pitch Accent Invisibility

  • Four tones, zero lip trace
  • Serbian has a four-way tonal accent system — short rising, short falling, long rising, long falling. These distinctions change word meaning but produce no visible lip difference. Two words that sound completely different look identical on a speaker's face.

Ekavian vs. Ijekavian Split

  • Same word, different vowels, same lips
  • Standard Serbian uses Ekavian vowels (mleko) while speakers from Bosnia and Montenegro use Ijekavian (mlijeko). At a table with guests from different parts of the former Yugoslavia, the same word looks different on every speaker's lips.

Fast Syllable Elision

  • Syllables that never reach the lips
  • In casual Serbian, unstressed syllables drop rapidly. Hoces li collapses to ces li, nije becomes n'je. What the ear catches as a syllable never forms on the lips — a deaf person loses words before they begin.

Consonant Cluster Cascade

  • Word boundaries vanish at group speed
  • Serbian tolerates long consonant clusters (crv, strm, trg). In relaxed group speech these compress further and word boundaries become nearly impossible to identify on lips alone.

Diaspora Code-Switching

  • Serbian-German mid-sentence
  • At family gatherings in diaspora communities in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, Serbian code-switches freely with German or English. The phonological system changes mid-sentence, producing confusing lip patterns for anyone trying to track one language at a time.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Serbia: the scale of daily exclusion

Approximately 7 million people live in Serbia, and extrapolating from GBD 2019 findings — which estimated that one in five people globally experience some form of hearing loss — suggests roughly 1.4 million Serbs navigate daily life with diminished hearing. Among adults over 60, rates climb considerably, meaning that the grandparents at the head of the slava table, the people most central to Serbian family gatherings, are disproportionately likely to be missing the conversation around them.

Serbia ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2009 and passed the Law on Prevention of Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities, yet provision for deaf and hard of hearing citizens remains thin. Serbian Sign Language is used by approximately 3,000 to 5,000 people, but interpreter availability is sparse outside Belgrade. Television captioning obligations exist in principle but are inconsistently enforced, leaving deaf viewers without access to news and public information.

Captio AI captions Serbian conversation in real time — whether a slava toast in Ekavian or a diaspora kitchen mixing Serbian and German — so deaf and hard of hearing people can follow every voice at the table, not piece together what they may have missed.
