Why Macedonian is hard to understand

- Stress gives no rhythm cue for lip-reading
- Macedonian places stress on the third syllable from the end of every word, with almost no exception. This rigid pattern means stress carries no lexical information and gives lip-readers none of the rhythmic variation they rely on to segment speech. Words of similar length all arrive with the same stress pattern.
Dialectal schwa
- A vowel that appears and disappears by region
- The schwa /ə/ is phonemic in many Macedonian dialects but nearly absent in standard Macedonian. At a gathering with speakers from different regions, the same word may be pronounced with or without a schwa, changing what the lips form enough to confuse a reader who has learned the standard pronunciation.
