Why Tamil is hard to understand
Agglutination
- Tamil builds extremely long words from stacked suffixes
- Tamil is one of the most agglutinative languages in the world — a single Tamil word can express what English requires a full clause to say. In spoken everyday Tamil, these long word forms are delivered at full conversational pace with few pauses. For a lip reader, Tamil speech produces extended visual streams with almost no usable segmentation points.
Diglossia
- Written Tamil and spoken Tamil are genuinely different languages
- Formal written Tamil (centamil) and colloquial spoken Tamil (koduntamil) differ so significantly that linguists classify them as separate registers with different vocabulary, grammar, and phonology. What a deaf person learns in school bears little resemblance to the fast colloquial Tamil spoken at a market stall, on a bus, or at a family meal.
Sri Lankan vs Indian Tamil
- Sri Lankan Tamil and Indian Tamil are distinct spoken varieties
- Tamil as spoken in Tamil Nadu differs substantially from Sri Lankan Tamil — in vocabulary, phonology, and prosody. Families and communities that span both regions navigate two varieties simultaneously. A deaf person calibrated to one will miss significant portions of the other.
Code-switching

India has approximately 63 million deaf and hard of hearing people — the second-largest such population in the world. Tamil Nadu, with a population of over 77 million, carries a proportionate share of this burden. For deaf people navigating Tamil-speaking daily life, exclusion is structural: Tamil has a uniquely wide gap between formal written language and colloquial spoken language — a phenomenon linguists call diglossia — meaning the Tamil learned in school sounds nothing like the Tamil spoken at the street stall, the family meal, or the bus stop. The setting where daily life actually happens is precisely where the language is least accessible.
Tamil Nadu has one of India's highest concentrations of schools for the deaf, but Indian Sign Language is absent from everyday informal settings. Only 5% of deaf children across India attend school, and even in Tamil Nadu's schools, the transition from educational support to daily-life independence happens into a world with no interpreter provision, no captioning infrastructure, and no public accessibility standard for the informal settings — markets, transport, family gatherings — that make up most of daily existence.
India's deaf and hard of hearing population is growing, driven by high rates of noise-induced hearing loss in urban environments and limited preventative healthcare reach in rural Tamil Nadu.
