Why Captio AI

Built for conversations that don't wait

Captions as they speak, not after

Captio AI shows each word as it is spoken. You read what the person is saying while they are still saying it — not after they have finished and moved on.

No lip reading needed

You do not need to face the speaker or position yourself to see their mouth. Captio AI picks up speech from any direction — across a counter, at a table, in a busy street.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, pharmacies, busy streets, crowded waiting rooms. Captio AI separates speech from background noise so captions stay accurate where everyday conversations actually happen.

Follows any conversation

One person or six. Captio AI captions whoever is speaking at any moment — so you follow the thread at a dinner table or keep up with a counter exchange without losing track.

Any accent, any pace

People do not slow down or enunciate for you. Captio AI handles fast talkers, regional accents, and casual speech — the way people actually talk in real life.

Any language, no setup

When someone speaks a language you do not know, switch to Live Translator. They speak their language — you read in yours. No configuration needed. Works in 60+ languages.

Polish

Why Polish is hard to understand

Consonant clusters

  • Polish packs consonants together in ways no other European language matches
  • Polish has consonant clusters that are exceptional even by Slavic standards — words like 'szczególnie' or 'bezpłatnie' stack fricatives and affricates in ways that produce minimal visible mouth movement. At conversational speed, Polish consonant-heavy speech gives a lip reader very little to work with.

Grammatical complexity

  • Polish has seven grammatical cases — word endings change constantly
  • Polish nouns, adjectives, and pronouns change form across seven cases. In fast everyday speech, the same word sounds different depending on its grammatical role. For a deaf person following captions, this means that every word that looks familiar in writing sounds different in speech across different sentences.

Fast informal registers

  • Everyday Polish speech drops and reduces at speed
  • Formal Polish is clear and deliberate. Everyday street Polish — in Warsaw, Kraków, and Gdańsk — contracts, drops endings, and uses informal vocabulary that differs significantly from the formal register. Daily life happens entirely in the informal register.

Only 1 in 5 using hearing aids

  • Most Polish people with hearing loss are not using the tools available to them
  • The EuroTrak Poland survey found that only one in five Polish people with hearing loss uses hearing aids. This means the population navigating Polish daily life without sound is significantly larger than official figures for aids provision would suggest — and most are doing so without any assistive technology.

Interpreter shortage

  • Only 45,000–60,000 Polish Sign Language users — and too few interpreters
  • Polish Sign Language (PJM) is used by 45,000–60,000 people, but interpreter provision for everyday informal settings is very limited. The bakery, the market, the family kitchen, and the bus have no interpreter. The individual manages alone.

The Challenge

1 million registered. 15% of all Polish adults with hearing loss. Only 1 in 5 using any support.

Poland has approximately 1 million people registered with hearing impairment, and 15.1% of Polish adults self-report some degree of hearing loss according to the EuroTrak Poland survey — one of the higher self-reported prevalence rates in Central Europe. Yet only one in five people with hearing loss in Poland uses hearing aids, leaving a large population navigating Polish daily life without any assistive support. For deaf and hard of hearing Poles, exclusion is embedded in ordinary settings: the bakery where the cashier speaks fast and doesn't repeat, the family dinner where conversation runs in fast regional Polish, the government office where Behördendeutsch-equivalent formal vocabulary is delivered quickly.

Polish Sign Language (PJM) is used by 45,000–60,000 people but interpreter provision for everyday informal settings is minimal. Poland's 38% disability unemployment rate reflects the broader infrastructure gap. A 2023 WHO Europe report on hearing loss inclusion in Poland identified the need for better community-level support beyond institutional settings — a gap that remains largely unaddressed. The bakery, the bus, the family table, and the market have no interpreter and no obligation to provide one.

Poland's ageing population — one of the fastest-ageing in Europe — is driving an increase in hearing loss prevalence. The EuroTrak data suggests significant unmet need. Captio AI captions Polish speech in real time — including fast consonant-cluster-heavy colloquial Polish and regional varieties — so the bakery, the family gathering, and the government office are no longer settings you have to navigate alone.
