Why Marathi is hard to understand
Retroflex phonemes
- Marathi shares the South Asian phonemes that are hardest to lip-read
- Like Hindi, Marathi has retroflex consonants (ट, ड, ण) and aspirated stops (ख, घ, छ) that are articulated with almost no distinguishing visible lip movement. South Asian languages are among the hardest to lip-read in the world, and Marathi shares the same structural challenge. For a deaf Marathi speaker, lip reading provides almost no usable information.
Fast street registers
- Mumbai Marathi is nothing like textbook Marathi
- Formal written Marathi is deliberate and close to Sanskrit. Mumbai street Marathi — Mumbaiya Marathi — is fast, heavily mixed with Hindi and English, and full of dropped syllables and colloquial shortenings. The gap between formal and casual Marathi is enormous, and daily life happens entirely in the casual register.
