Why Captio AI

Built for conversations that don't wait

Captions as they speak, not after

Captio AI shows each word as it is spoken. You read what the person is saying while they are still saying it — not after they have finished and moved on.

No lip reading needed

You do not need to face the speaker or position yourself to see their mouth. Captio AI picks up speech from any direction — across a counter, at a table, in a busy street.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, pharmacies, busy streets, crowded waiting rooms. Captio AI separates speech from background noise so captions stay accurate where everyday conversations actually happen.

Follows any conversation

One person or six. Captio AI captions whoever is speaking at any moment — so you follow the thread at a dinner table or keep up with a counter exchange without losing track.

Any accent, any pace

People do not slow down or enunciate for you. Captio AI handles fast talkers, regional accents, and casual speech — the way people actually talk in real life.

Any language, no setup

When someone speaks a language you do not know, switch to Live Translator. They speak their language — you read in yours. No configuration needed. Works in 60+ languages.

Lithuanian

Why Lithuanian is hard to understand

Complex morphology

  • Lithuanian word endings change constantly — and blur at speed
  • Lithuanian preserves seven grammatical cases, with word endings shifting by case, gender, and number. Spoken at conversational pace, these endings contract and blur. A word that looks distinct in writing becomes nearly unidentifiable on the lips when the ending changes.

Pitch accent

  • Lithuanian uses tonal pitch distinctions that cannot be lip-read
  • Lithuanian has a two-way pitch accent system — the same syllable sequence can carry rising or falling tone, changing the word's meaning. This distinction is entirely acoustic. Lip-reading gives no access to it.

Church and parish life

  • Church is the centre of Lithuanian community — and entirely spoken
  • Parish life — Sunday Mass, confirmations, seasonal celebrations, the coffee after the service — is a primary social institution in Lithuania. None of it is signed. A deaf person in a Lithuanian community is present at these gatherings but participating in none of them.

Family exclusion

  • Most deaf Lithuanians were born to hearing families
  • The majority of deaf people in Lithuania have hearing parents who did not learn Lithuanian Sign Language. The family kitchen table — Kūčios (Christmas Eve), Easter, name days — is the first and most persistent place exclusion is felt.

Transport and public settings

  • Buses call stops verbally and no one thinks to repeat them
  • Regional and intercity buses in Lithuania announce stops verbally with no visual screens. Market vendors call prices across stalls. Municipal office staff speak across counters. None of these settings have any accommodation for a deaf passenger or customer.

The Challenge

297,000 people in Lithuania. Navigating daily life without sound.

Applying the European self-reported hearing loss prevalence of 10.6% to Lithuania's population of 2.8 million gives approximately 297,000 people with some degree of hearing loss. Around 8,000 deaf Lithuanians use Lithuanian Sign Language as their primary language. For them, daily life means a sequence of unaccommodated settings: the turgus where the vendor calls a price you cannot hear, the parish gathering where conversation happens around you, the family Kūčios table where everyone else is following a joke.

Lithuanian Sign Language (Lietuvių gestų kalba) was legally recognised in 1995. Lithuania has 111 working sign language interpreters for a country of 2.8 million. The gap between legal recognition and the reality of navigating a parish coffee morning or a bus journey is absolute. Interpreters cover institutions — not the turgus, the kiosk, or the family table.

Lithuania's population is ageing, and hearing loss prevalence rises steeply after 55. The WHO projects 2.5 billion people globally with hearing loss by 2050. The infrastructure supporting deaf and hard of hearing Lithuanians in informal settings is not growing to match. Captio AI captions Lithuanian speech in real time — including fast colloquial speech, regional varieties, and reduced informal forms — so the market, the church hall, and the family table are no longer settings you have to navigate alone.

Privacy

What you hear stays with you.

Gone the moment it ends

Captio AI processes your audio in real time and discards it immediately. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is kept.

Not a product

Your conversations are not something Captio AI sells, shares, or monetizes — to anyone, for any reason.

Not used to train anything

What you say in a doctor's appointment or a job interview never ends up in a training dataset. Not ours. Not anyone else's.
