Why Captio AI

Built for conversations that don't wait

Captions as they speak, not after

Captio AI shows each word as it is spoken. You read what the person is saying while they are still saying it — not after they have finished and moved on.

No lip reading needed

You do not need to face the speaker or position yourself to see their mouth. Captio AI picks up speech from any direction — across a counter, at a table, in a busy street.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, pharmacies, busy streets, crowded waiting rooms. Captio AI separates speech from background noise so captions stay accurate where everyday conversations actually happen.

Follows any conversation

One person or six. Captio AI captions whoever is speaking at any moment — so you follow the thread at a dinner table or keep up with a counter exchange without losing track.

Any accent, any pace

People do not slow down or enunciate for you. Captio AI handles fast talkers, regional accents, and casual speech — the way people actually talk in real life.

Any language, no setup

When someone speaks a language you do not know, switch to Live Translator. They speak their language — you read in yours. No configuration needed. Works in 60+ languages.

Kannada

Why Kannada is hard to understand

Agglutination

  • Kannada builds long words through suffix stacking — difficult to parse visually at speed
  • Kannada is a Dravidian language with high agglutination — suffixes for tense, subject, object, and aspect attach to the same root, creating extended word forms. In fast everyday speech, these words are delivered quickly with minimal pause. For a lip reader, Kannada produces long visual streams with few natural break points.

Bengaluru English mixing

  • Bengaluru's tech culture has created a heavily English-mixed Kannada daily register
  • Bengaluru is India's technology capital, and its daily Kannada has evolved to incorporate enormous amounts of English — from individual words to entire phrases. A conversation in a Bengaluru coffee shop or office can shift between Kannada, English, and Hindi mid-sentence without any speaker noticing. For a deaf person, this linguistic fluidity makes following any conversation unpredictable.

Old and new Kannada

  • Formal Kannada and street Kannada are genuinely different languages
  • Written and formal Kannada is close to classical forms. Everyday spoken Kannada — especially in Bengaluru — is faster, more mixed, and uses shortened forms that differ significantly from formal speech. Daily life happens entirely in the colloquial register, which sounds nothing like formal Kannada.

North Karnataka vs South

  • Karnataka is linguistically diverse and Kannada varies significantly by region
  • North Karnataka Kannada (Dharwad, Hubli) and South Karnataka Kannada (Bengaluru, Mysuru) are phonologically and lexically distinct. A deaf person calibrated to one regional variety will miss portions of the other. Add Tulu, Kodava, and other languages spoken across Karnataka, and daily life becomes linguistically complex even within the state.

No ISL in daily life

  • Karnataka's NPPCD programme treats deafness institutionally — daily life has no support
  • Karnataka has a dedicated NPPCD programme focused on early identification and intervention. But Indian Sign Language is absent from daily informal settings — the market, the tea shop, the tech office corridor, and the family gathering. The programme addresses medical reality; daily social life remains inaccessible.

The Challenge

63 million in India. Bengaluru is a global tech city — but not for its deaf residents.

India has approximately 63 million deaf and hard of hearing people nationally. Karnataka, with a population of over 67 million including Bengaluru's 13 million, carries a proportionate share of this burden. Karnataka's NPPCD programme estimates approximately 20,839 children aged 0–6 with hearing impairment in the state — and this is only the youngest cohort. For deaf people navigating Kannada-speaking daily life in Bengaluru, the irony is acute: the city that hosts global technology companies building AI systems cannot provide its deaf residents with basic accessibility in a coffee shop, a market, or a family gathering.

Indian Sign Language is absent from daily informal settings across Karnataka, as it is across India broadly. Only 5% of deaf children in India attend school nationally. Bengaluru's linguistic complexity — Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and English all in active daily use — means that deaf people navigating the city face a multilingual barrier that goes beyond any single language. The tech office corridor, the coffee shop, and the auto-rickshaw rank are settings where modern tech is everywhere but real-time accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing people is absent.

Karnataka's growing urban population, noise exposure from construction and industry, and limited preventative healthcare in rural areas mean the deaf and hard of hearing population is increasing. The infrastructure gap between scale and daily-life support is significant. Captio AI captions Kannada speech in real time — including Bengaluru's English-Kannada mixing, regional North and South Karnataka varieties, and fast colloquial registers — so the coffee shop, the family gathering, and the tech office hallway are no longer settings you have to navigate alone.
