Why Captio AI

Built for conversations that don't wait

Captions as they speak, not after

Captio AI shows each word as it is spoken. You read what the person is saying while they are still saying it — not after they have finished and moved on.

No lip reading needed

You do not need to face the speaker or position yourself to see their mouth. Captio AI picks up speech from any direction — across a counter, at a table, in a busy street.

Works through background noise

Restaurants, pharmacies, busy streets, crowded waiting rooms. Captio AI separates speech from background noise so captions stay accurate where everyday conversations actually happen.

Follows any conversation

One person or six. Captio AI captions whoever is speaking at any moment — so you follow the thread at a dinner table or keep up with a counter exchange without losing track.

Any accent, any pace

People do not slow down or enunciate for you. Captio AI handles fast talkers, regional accents, and casual speech — the way people actually talk in real life.

Any language, no setup

When someone speaks a language you do not know, switch to Live Translator. They speak their language — you read in yours. No configuration needed. Works in 60+ languages.

Galician

Why Galician is hard to understand

Distinct vowel system

  • Galician has seven vowels — Spanish has five. The difference is acoustic, not visible.
  • Galician preserves a seven-vowel system that Spanish reduced centuries ago. The distinctions are acoustic — lip patterns for Galician vowels overlap with Spanish ones in ways that make reading them correctly impossible without hearing the sound.

Code-switching

  • Galician and Spanish switch mid-sentence without warning
  • Across Galicia, most conversations move fluidly between Galician and Spanish — sometimes mid-sentence. A deaf person tracking Galician loses the thread when Spanish appears. The switch is unmarked and frequent.

Rural isolation

  • Rural Galicia has dispersed population and no interpreter infrastructure
  • Galicia is one of Europe's most dispersed rural regions — thousands of small aldeas across river valleys and hills. A deaf person in a small village may be the only deaf person for miles, with no practical access to sign language support.

Older population

  • Galicia has Spain's oldest median age — acquired hearing loss is rarely accommodated
  • Galicia is one of the oldest regions in Spain by median age. Acquired hearing loss in older adults is common but almost never accommodated in daily settings — the farmacia, the bar, the post office, the neighbours at the gate.

No Galician sign language

  • Sign language support comes in Spanish, not Galician
  • Galicia has no officially recognised Galician Sign Language. For a Galician speaker whose daily life is in galego, even when a sign language interpreter is present, the interpretation is in a different language from the conversation taking place.

The Challenge

270,000 people in Galicia. Excluded from daily life in their own language.

Applying Spain's EuroTrak-reported hearing loss prevalence of 10% to Galicia's population of 2.7 million gives approximately 270,000 people with some degree of hearing loss in the region. Galicia's population skews significantly older than the Spanish average — one of the highest median ages in the country — meaning actual prevalence is likely higher. For those with significant hearing difficulty, daily life means the mercado vendor's call you cannot catch, the bar conversation you are watching rather than joining, the family meal where everyone else is laughing at something you missed.

Galicia has no recognised Galician Sign Language. The sign language available in the region is LSE (Spanish), governed by Spain's Law 27/2007. This means that even formal institutional support — rare in informal settings — arrives in Spanish rather than Galician. For a deaf person whose daily life is in galego, the language of access is not the language of conversation. In informal daily life — the aldea post office, the mercado hall, the bar tertulia — there is no accommodation at all.

Spain's population is ageing at one of the fastest rates in Europe, and Galicia leads that trend. Hearing loss prevalence rises steeply with age. The WHO projects 2.5 billion people worldwide with hearing loss by 2050. Captio AI captions Galician speech in real time — including fast colloquial galego, Galician–Spanish code-switching, and regional coastal varieties — so the mercado, the bar, and the family table are no longer conversations you have to navigate alone.

Privacy

What you hear stays with you.

Gone the moment it ends

Captio AI processes your audio in real time and discards it immediately. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is kept.

Not a product

Your conversations are not something Captio AI sells, shares, or monetizes — to anyone, for any reason.

Not used to train anything

What you say in a doctor's appointment or a job interview never ends up in a training dataset. Not ours. Not anyone else's.
