Built for conversations that don't wait
Captions as they speak, not after
Captio AI shows each word as it is spoken. You read what the person is saying while they are still saying it — not after they have finished and moved on.
No lip reading needed
You do not need to face the speaker or position yourself to see their mouth. Captio AI picks up speech from any direction — across a counter, at a table, in a busy street.
Works through background noise
Restaurants, pharmacies, busy streets, crowded waiting rooms. Captio AI separates speech from background noise so captions stay accurate where everyday conversations actually happen.
Follows any conversation
One person or six. Captio AI captions whoever is speaking at any moment — so you follow the thread at a dinner table or keep up with a counter exchange without losing track.
Any accent, any pace
People do not slow down or enunciate for you. Captio AI handles fast talkers, regional accents, and casual speech — the way people actually talk in real life.
Any language, no setup
When someone speaks a language you do not know, switch to Live Translator. They speak their language — you read in yours. No configuration needed. Works in 60+ languages.
Why Slovenian is hard to understand
Dialect diversity
- Slovenian has seven major dialect groups — each sounds distinct
- Slovenian has one of the most diverse dialect landscapes in Europe relative to its speaker population. The Gorenjska, Primorska, Štajerska, Koroška, Dolenjska, Rovtarje, and Prekmurje groups differ significantly in vowel systems, intonation, and vocabulary. A deaf person calibrated to Ljubljana standard may miss substantial portions of a regional conversation.
Gostilna culture
- Village tavern life is loud, fast, and socially essential
- The gostilna is the social centre of Slovenian village and small-town life — a place for meals, coffee, news, and community. Tables of several speakers, background kitchen noise, conversations in regional dialect. A deaf person in a gostilna is present but not participating.
Rural dispersal
- Deaf people in rural Slovenia navigate daily life with no local interpreter
- A significant proportion of Slovenia's population lives in dispersed rural villages. Slovenia has 61 registered sign language interpreters for the entire country. A deaf person in a rural občina has no practical access to local interpretation — the nearest help may be Ljubljana.
Traditional community events
- Martinovanje, harvest festivals, and parish events are spoken-only
- Slovenia's traditional community calendar — Martinovanje (St Martin's wine festival), harvest events, local festas, and parish gatherings — is built around spoken participation. There is no signing, no visual alternative, and no accommodation.
Small-town counter interactions
- Pharmacies, post offices, and council offices in small towns have no written backup
- Unlike Ljubljana, small-town and rural service counters in Slovenia rarely have written communication options. A pharmacist or post office clerk speaks, expects a verbal response, and moves on. There is no system for a deaf customer.

Applying a European clinical hearing loss prevalence of 15% to Slovenia's population of approximately 2.1 million gives around 315,000 people with some degree of hearing loss. Around 1,500 deaf Slovenians use Slovenian Sign Language (ZNJ) as their primary language. For them, daily exclusion is specific: the tržnica vendor speaking in Štajerska dialect, the gostilna table where the conversation carries on without you, the family Martinovanje gathering where everyone else is following the toast.
In June 2021, Slovenia became the first country in the world to give constitutional recognition to sign language. This is a landmark legal achievement. But constitutions govern institutions, not the gostilna or the village post office. Slovenia has 61 registered sign language interpreters for a country of 2.1 million. Informal daily life — markets, family meals, local community events — has no accommodation and no obligation to provide one.
Slovenia's population is ageing, and hearing loss prevalence rises steeply with age. Hearing loss disproportionately affects older adults navigating exactly the informal settings — the village pharmacy, the gostilna, the tržnica — that carry no legal accommodation obligation. Captio AI captions Slovenian speech in real time — including all seven major dialect groups — so the market, the gostilna, and the family table are no longer settings you have to navigate alone.
