Why Ukrainian is hard to understand
Palatalization
- Hard, soft, and half-soft consonants that look alike
- Ukrainian contrasts plain and palatalized consonants — and has a third 'half-soft' category too. The softening is a tongue-body gesture with barely any visible cue, so from a distant stage a deaf attendee sees the same mouth for consonants that make different words in a keynote.
Sibilant allophony
- Western speech shifts sibilants before front vowels
- In western Ukrainian, posterior sibilants shift before high front vowels in a way Kyiv speech does not. A deaf attendee calibrated to standard Ukrainian meets, from a Lviv presenter, different sibilant realisations that further blur already hard-to-read distinctions.
Unstressed centralization
- Weak vowels drift and blur at speed
- Ukrainian keeps its vowels fuller than Russian, but in fast speech unstressed vowels drift toward a central quality. In a rapid keynote this centralization softens the vowels that would help a deaf attendee segment a long technical term on the lips.
Consonant clusters

- Ukrainian permits demanding consonant clusters that compress further at podium pace. In a fast panel exchange these run together into a stream that offers a lip-reader almost no visual seams between words.
Ukrainian–English code-switching
