Why Swedish is hard to understand
Pitch accent
- Word pairs told apart by pitch, not by the lips
- Swedish has two contrastive pitch accents on stressed syllables, and the same sequence of sounds can be two different words depending on the pitch pattern. Pitch is carried in the voice, not on the mouth, so a deaf attendee watching a distant keynote speaker gets no visual cue for the accent that fixes the meaning.
Large vowel system
- Nine vowels, many rounded and close together
- Swedish has a large vowel inventory — nine qualities, distinguished by length, giving around eighteen phonemes — including front rounded vowels like y, ö, and ä. Many of these look almost identical on the lips, so a deaf attendee cannot tell apart the vowel that changes a technical term.
The sje-sound
- A hard-to-place sound that varies by region
- The Swedish sje-sound ranges from a back, almost h-like sound in the north to a more front, sh-like sound in the south and in Finland-Swedish. It has no consistent lip shape, so from an audience seat a deaf attendee cannot read the sound at all, and it appears in common vocabulary.
Regional vowel shifts
- Scanian, Gotland, and Finland-Swedish differ
- Swedish dialects shift the vowels — Scanian heavily diphthongises long vowels, Gotland preserves old diphthongs, and Finland-Swedish has its own melody. A deaf attendee calibrated to Stockholm Swedish meets different vowel shapes on speakers from other regions.
