Why Polish is hard to understand
Sibilant thicket
- Several s- and sh-like sounds that look identical
- Polish distinguishes a dense set of sibilants — s, sz, ś, and the voiced ż, ź, plus the affricates — that sit close together and look almost identical on the lips. From a distant stage a deaf attendee cannot tell them apart, yet they separate different words in a technical talk.
Consonant clusters
- Dense clusters that compress at speed
- Polish is famous for long consonant clusters where several consonants pile up at the start or end of a word. In a fast keynote these clusters run together into a stream, giving a lip-reader almost no visual footing to segment a term.
Palatalization
- Softened consonants with barely visible cues
- Polish softens many consonants through palatalization, a tongue-body raising toward the palate that changes meaning but is nearly invisible from the front. A deaf attendee sees the same mouth for a plain and a palatalized consonant that make different words.
Nasal vowels
- ą and ę made in the nose, not on the lips
- Polish has the nasal vowels ą and ę, produced at the soft palate with little visible lip movement and shifting depending on the following consonant. A deaf attendee watching a presenter misses a nasal contrast that changes the word in a keynote.
Polish–English code-switching
- Technical English inside Polish sentences
- Polish academic and industry talks drop English terms into Polish sentences constantly, especially in technology and business. A deaf attendee lip-reading Polish meets English phonology on the key vocabulary, then returns to Polish, with no visual signal of the switch.
