Why Persian is hard to understand
Back-of-throat consonants
- Sounds made deep in the throat, invisible on the lips
- Persian has several consonants produced far back in the mouth and throat — خ, غ, ق — with no visible lip movement. These appear in formal and technical vocabulary, so from a distant stage a deaf attendee sees nothing of the sounds that distinguish one keynote term from another.
Ezafe linking
- An unstressed vowel that ties phrases together
- Persian links nouns to their modifiers with the ezafe, a short unstressed -e that is often not written and easily missed. It carries essential grammatical structure but sits on weak, fleeting vowels, so a deaf attendee cannot see how the parts of a complex phrase connect on the lips.
Short-vowel omission
- The vowels that carry meaning are the ones that drop
- Persian short vowels are unstable, unwritten, and reduced in fast speech, while long vowels stay stable. In a rapid keynote the short vowels that separate two words weaken and disappear, leaving a deaf attendee with a consonant skeleton and no way to fill it in.
Tehrani versus Dari
- Iranian and Afghan Persian differ on the podium
- A Persian-language conference may bring Tehrani Iranian Persian and Afghan Dari speakers together. They differ in vowels and in whether certain back consonants merge, so a deaf attendee calibrated to Tehrani Persian meets different lip shapes from a Dari-speaking presenter.

Hearing loss is common in Iran and shaped by specific structural factors. A population study in Tehran found hearing impairment in around 14% of people, with roughly 5% having disabling hearing loss, and the country's high rate of consanguineous marriage means hereditary hearing loss is markedly elevated — consanguinity among the parents of deaf children runs at about 65%, nearly double the general rate.
