Why Malayalam is hard to understand
Large consonant inventory
- Dental, alveolar, and retroflex all kept apart
- Malayalam has one of the largest consonant inventories among Indian languages, keeping clear contrasts among dental, alveolar, and retroflex places of articulation. From a distant stage a deaf attendee sees one mouth shape where the language makes three different sounds, each capable of changing a technical term.
Subapical retroflexes
- True tongue-curl sounds with no lip cue
- Malayalam's retroflexes are true subapical consonants, made with the underside of the tongue against the roof of the mouth. They give no visible signal at the lips, so a deaf attendee cannot tell a retroflex from a dental or alveolar consonant on a presenter's face in a keynote.
Vowel length and gemination
- Long vowels and doubled consonants that carry meaning
- Malayalam contrasts short and long vowels and single versus doubled consonants, both of which change the word. These are timing distinctions, not lip shapes, so at podium pace a deaf attendee cannot see which of two terms was said.
