Why Tamil is hard to understand
Literary–spoken diglossia
- Podium Tamil and everyday Tamil are two varieties
- Tamil is deeply diglossic: keynotes use centamil, the formal literary variety, while everyday speech uses koduntamil. A deaf attendee who lip-reads colloquial Tamil meets a prepared talk in a register with different verb forms and vocabulary, so the familiar words on a speaker's mouth take unfamiliar shapes.
Retroflex series
- A full set of tongue-curl sounds invisible on the lips
- Tamil has a complete retroflex series — ʈ, ɖ, ɳ, ɭ, ɻ — made by curling the tongue back to the roof of the mouth. From a distant stage these give no lip cue, so a deaf attendee sees the same shape for dental, alveolar, and retroflex sounds that make different technical terms.
Multiple rhotics and laterals
- Sounds English lacks, hard to tell apart on the mouth
- Tamil distinguishes several r-like and l-like sounds — including retroflex ones — that look nearly identical on the lips and have no clear English equivalent. In a fast keynote, the fine distinctions that separate two words are exactly the ones a lip-reader cannot recover.
Colloquial reduction
- Casual Tamil elides consonants and nasalises vowels
- In fast spoken Tamil, intervocalic consonants drop, clusters simplify, and preceding vowels nasalise. During a lively panel Q&A the careful enunciation of the prepared talk gives way to reduced, run-together speech that offers a deaf attendee little visual footing.
Tamil–English code-switching
- Technical English inside Tamil sentences
- Urban Tamil academic and professional speech mixes English terms into Tamil constantly, especially in Chennai's technology and engineering circles. A deaf attendee lip-reading Tamil must switch to English phonology on the key vocabulary, then back, with no visual signal of the change.
