Why Latvian is hard to understand
Syllable tones
- Three tones — including a 'broken' tone — you cannot see
- Standard Latvian distinguishes long syllables by tone: level, falling, and a 'broken' tone marked by a sudden glottal catch. These contrasts can separate two words with the same sounds, and they live entirely in pitch — nothing in the lips signals which tone occurred, so a deaf attendee sees one mouth for words the tone keeps apart.
Palatalization
- Soft consonants that barely show on the lips
- Latvian marks palatalization on several consonants — a 'hard' versus 'soft' distinction that carries meaning. The tongue-body raising that softens a consonant is nearly invisible from the front, so a deaf attendee sees the same mouth for consonants that make different words in a keynote.
Latgalian variety
- The east of the country sounds different
- Latgalian, spoken in the southeast, has its own tonal system and a stronger soft–hard consonant opposition. A conference may bring standard Riga Latvian and Latgalian speakers to the same panel, so a deaf attendee meets a variety with different vowels and tones from one presenter to the next.
Fixed stress hides the ending
- Stress on the first syllable, meaning on the last
- Latvian stresses the first syllable of almost every word, but its grammar is carried by endings at the far end. Those unstressed final syllables are exactly where fast speech weakens the vowels, so the part that signals a term's grammatical role is the part that fades first on the lips.
Latvian–Russian/English code-switching
- Technical terms in another language mid-sentence
- Latvian technology and academic speech, especially in Riga, mixes in Russian and English terms constantly. A deaf attendee lip-reading Latvian meets a different phonology on the key vocabulary, then returns to Latvian, with no visual signal of the switch.
