Why Belarusian is hard to understand

- Unstressed o merges into a clear open a
- Belarusian merges unstressed o into a clear open a — even after soft consonants — and spells it that way. Words look different from their stressed forms, and from a distant stage the shifted vowels give a deaf attendee little to segment a long technical term by in a keynote.
Strong palatalization
- Softened consonants that are hard to see
- Belarusian is distinctive among Slavic languages for how salient its soft–hard consonant contrast is, including strongly palatalized s and z. The softening is a tongue-body gesture with barely any visible cue, so a deaf attendee sees the same mouth for consonants that make different words.
The ŭ and w-merger
- A distinctive sound where v and l become a w
- Belarusian merges v and l into a w-like sound (ŭ) at the ends of syllables — a feature that sets it apart from Russian. This sound gives a lip-reader little clear cue, so a deaf attendee misses a consonant that shapes the word in a technical talk.
