Why Albanian is hard to understand
Dental fricatives
- The th and dh sounds with almost no visible movement
- Albanian has the dental fricatives th (θ) and dh (ð), made with the tongue between the teeth and producing very little visible lip movement. These are common Albanian sounds that appear throughout academic vocabulary, so from a distant stage a deaf attendee misses exactly the sounds that carry a technical term.
Rhotic contrast
- The single r and the trilled rr look identical
- Albanian contrasts a flapped single r with a trilled rr, a distinction that changes the word but looks identical on the lips. In a keynote a deaf attendee cannot tell the two apart, so a whole set of terms collapses into one shape.
Gheg–Tosk divide
- Northern and southern Albanian differ sharply
- Standard Albanian is based on Tosk, but Gheg — spoken across northern Albania and Kosovo — has nasal and long vowels Tosk lacks, and treats several consonants differently. A deaf attendee calibrated to standard Tosk meets very different vowel shapes from a Gheg-speaking presenter on the panel.
The ë vowel and clusters
- A neutral vowel that drops, and consonants that pile up
- Albanian has the mid-central vowel ë, which is often dropped at the ends of words in Gheg, and it permits demanding consonant clusters. In fast podium speech the dropped ë and the compressed clusters leave a deaf attendee with little visual footing.
Albanian–English code-switching
- Technical terms in another language mid-sentence
- Albanian academic and professional speech drops English — and, from older generations, Italian — terms into Albanian sentences. A deaf attendee lip-reading Albanian meets a different phonology on the key vocabulary, then returns to Albanian, with no visual signal of the switch.

Reliable data on the deaf and hard of hearing population of the Albanian-speaking world has historically been scarce — so much so that Albania's Ministry of Social Welfare had to commission the national and Finnish deaf associations to survey deaf adults in 2015 precisely because no dependable information existed on their access to information, education, and employment.
