Why Bosnian is hard to understand
Pitch accent
- Rising and falling tones you cannot see
- Bosnian inherits the Shtokavian pitch-and-length accent system, where stressed syllables carry rising or falling tones and long or short quantities. These distinctions ride on pitch and duration, not on the lips, so from a distant stage a deaf attendee gets no visual cue for the tone that separates one word from another.
Ijekavian reflexes
- The 'ije' and 'je' sequences that reshape words
- Standard Bosnian uses Ijekavian pronunciation, where the old jat vowel surfaces as ije or je — reshaping common words into longer diphthongal sequences. A deaf attendee finds familiar terms carry unfamiliar vowel shapes on a presenter's lips in a keynote.
Affricate contrasts
- č and ć, dž and đ look almost identical
- Bosnian distinguishes two pairs of affricates — č versus ć and dž versus đ — that sit very close together and look nearly identical on the lips, and it retains the h sound where neighbouring varieties drop it. In a keynote these fine contrasts decide the word but give a lip-reader nothing to see.
