Why Hungarian is hard to understand
Vowel harmony
- Suffix vowels that shift to match the root
- Hungarian suffixes change their vowels to harmonise with the root — front stays with front, back with back. These unstressed suffix vowels carry grammar at the ends of long words, and in fast podium speech they weaken and blur, exactly where a deaf attendee needs them to follow the sentence.
Agglutination
- Very long words built from stacked suffixes
- Hungarian is famously agglutinative, gluing many suffixes onto a root so a single word can express what a whole clause would in English. From a distant stage, a deaf attendee who misses one suffix in the middle loses the grammatical thread of a technical term.
Vowel length and gemination
- Long vowels and doubled consonants that change meaning
- Hungarian has fourteen vowels in short and long pairs, and frequently doubled (geminate) consonants — both of which change the word. These are timing distinctions, not lip shapes, so at podium pace a deaf attendee cannot see which of two terms was said.
No cognate footholds
- A language unrelated to those around it
- Hungarian is not related to the Indo-European languages surrounding it, so its words share no roots a listener could guess from. Where a lip-reader might fill a gap in a familiar-looking word, Hungarian offers no such foothold — every missed sound is a word that cannot be reconstructed from context.
Hungarian–English code-switching
- Technical English inside Hungarian sentences
- Hungarian technology and academic speech, especially in Budapest, drops English terms into Hungarian sentences constantly. A deaf attendee lip-reading Hungarian meets English phonology on the key vocabulary, then returns to Hungarian, with no visual signal of the switch.
