Why Azerbaijani is hard to understand
Vowel harmony
- Suffix vowels that shift and blur at speed
- Azerbaijani suffixes change their vowels to harmonise with the root — front with front, back with back. These unstressed suffix vowels sit at the ends of long words, carrying grammar, and in fast podium speech they weaken and blur, exactly where a deaf attendee needs them to follow the sentence.
Agglutination
- Long words built from stacked suffixes
- Azerbaijani glues many suffixes onto a root to build a single long word that can carry a whole clause's worth of meaning. From a distant stage, a deaf attendee who misses one suffix in the middle loses the grammatical thread of a technical term.
Uvular and back consonants
- Sounds made far back in the mouth, invisible on the lips
- Azerbaijani has back consonants — the q, ğ, and x sounds — produced at or near the uvula with no visible lip movement. In a keynote these give a lip-reader nothing to work with, yet they appear in common roots and suffixes and change the word.
Cross-border varieties
- Republic and Iranian Azerbaijani differ on the podium
- Azerbaijani is spoken both in the Republic of Azerbaijan and across northwest Iran, and the northern and southern varieties differ in vowels and vocabulary. A deaf attendee calibrated to Baku Azerbaijani meets different lip shapes from a southern-variety speaker on an international panel.
