Why Spanish is hard to understand
Speed
- One of the fastest languages, at podium pace
- Spanish is among the highest-syllable-rate languages in the world, around 7.8 syllables a second in natural speech. A confident keynote speaker delivers a complex sentence and moves on before a deaf attendee, watching from a distance, can segment it visually. The pace that makes a talk fluent makes it unreadable from the lips.
Syllable-final deletion
- Caribbean and southern speakers drop word endings
- In Caribbean and Andalusian Spanish, word-final consonants weaken or disappear — 'las casas' becomes 'lah casah'. A presenter from Havana, San Juan, or Seville produces terms whose endings, which carry number and agreement, simply are not there on the lips.
Dialect variation
- Spain, Mexico, Argentina on one panel
- An international Spanish-language conference brings Castilian, Mexican, Rioplatense, and Colombian speakers to the same stage. The seseo–ceceo distinction, Argentine intonation, and Andalusian aspiration create different lip shapes for the same word, so a deaf attendee re-calibrates for every panellist.

- The tapped and rolled r of Spanish, and the yeísmo merger of ll and y, produce sounds that are either invisible on the lips or identical to one another. In a technical term delivered from the podium, the consonants that distinguish it are exactly the ones a lip-reader cannot recover.

- Formal academic Spanish versus the hallway
- Podium Spanish uses a formal, subordinate-clause-heavy register with long, embedded sentences, quite different from the fast, casual Spanish of the coffee break. A deaf attendee has to lip-read across both — the dense prepared talk and the relaxed networking chat — within the same event.
