Why Norwegian is hard to understand
Two pitch accents
- Word pairs told apart by pitch, not by the lips
- Norwegian has two lexical pitch accents on stressed syllables — many two-syllable word pairs differ only in their tonal contour. Pitch is carried in the voice, not on the mouth, so a deaf attendee watching a distant keynote speaker gets no visual cue for the accent that fixes the meaning of a term.
No single spoken standard
- Norwegians present in their own dialect
- Norway has no single prestige spoken standard — people use their regional dialect even in formal settings, including on the podium. A conference can put four markedly different dialects on the same programme, so a deaf attendee faces several distinct phonological systems from one session to the next.
Eastern retroflexes
- Retroflex consonants and the 'thick L'
- Eastern Norwegian, including Oslo, has retroflex consonants formed when r fuses with a following consonant, plus a distinctive retroflex flap known as the 'thick L'. These are made with the tongue curled back, invisible from the front, so a deaf attendee cannot see the consonant that changes a word.
Western diphthongs
- Bergen and the west shift the vowels
- Western Norwegian, around Bergen, has more diphthongs and softer consonants than the eastern varieties on which reference materials are based. A deaf attendee calibrated to Oslo Norwegian meets different vowel shapes from a western presenter on the panel.
Norwegian–English code-switching
- Technical English inside Norwegian sentences
- Norwegian professionals — especially in technology and the energy sector — drop English terms into Norwegian sentences constantly. A deaf attendee lip-reading Norwegian meets English phonology on the key vocabulary, then returns to Norwegian, with no visual signal of the switch.
