Why Marathi is hard to understand
Four-way stops
- Plain, aspirated, voiced, and breathy — four where the lips show one
- Marathi contrasts a four-way set of stops — plain voiceless, aspirated, voiced, and breathy voiced. The differences are aspiration and voice quality with no lip cue, so from a distant stage four different consonants look like one to a deaf attendee, and technical terms turn on exactly these contrasts.
