Built for a world that announces everything by sound
Captions any spoken exchange in real time
Airport staff, hotel receptionists, taxi drivers, tour guides. Hold the phone toward whoever is speaking and read the captions — in any setting, in any country.
60+ languages — no language barrier
Live Translator captions and translates in real time. They speak their language — you read in yours. For every country, every language, no manual setup between interactions.
Works anywhere with a data connection
Wi-Fi or mobile data. A local SIM or roaming plan keeps Captio AI running in any country — airports, hotels, rural areas, and everywhere in between.
Handles travel environments
Noisy airports, busy stations, echoing hotel lobbies. Captio AI is built for real environments — not quiet controlled rooms. It captions through the ambient noise of travel.
Discreet in any public setting
Hold the phone or place it near the speaker. Captio AI runs quietly and draws no attention — useful in customs, immigration, and any formal travel interaction where discretion matters.
Private by default
Travel conversations — customs declarations, hotel bookings, personal exchanges — are never stored or shared. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately.
Why Swedish is hard to understand
Two pitch accents
- Swedish Accent 1 and Accent 2 differ only in pitch contour — completely invisible on the lips
- Swedish has two contrastive prosodic accents: Accent 1 (a single pitch peak, rising-falling) and Accent 2 (a double pitch peak, falling-rising-falling). These accents distinguish word pairs with identical consonant-vowel sequences — the only difference is pitch movement, carried entirely in the larynx. At Stockholm Arlanda or Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, a gate agent or hotel receptionist uses accent distinctions to differentiate word pairs that look completely identical on their face. A deaf traveler watching the speaker's lips receives no information about which accent — and therefore which word — just arrived.
The sj-sound /ɧ/
- Swedish's sj-sound is produced at the throat or velum — invisible on the lips
- Swedish has the phoneme /ɧ/ — the 'sj-sound' — which appears in common words like 'sjuk' (sick), 'sju' (seven), 'skjul' (shed). This is one of the most phonetically unusual sounds in any European language, described as a simultaneous labial and velar/uvular fricative. It is produced at the back of the vocal tract — no visible lip or jaw component reaches the front of the face. At an Arlanda check-in counter or Stockholm Central station, this sound appears in standard travel vocabulary with no visual correlate.
18 vowel phonemes
- Swedish's large vowel inventory creates many near-homophone pairs invisible on the lips
- Swedish has 18 vowel phonemes — 9 vowel qualities, each in long and short variants. Many Swedish word pairs differ only in a vowel quality distinction that produces minimal or no change in lip shape. The interaction between vowel quantity and quality (where short and long versions of the same vowel differ in both duration AND quality) creates a large set of near-homophones that a deaf traveler reading lips cannot distinguish.
Six dialect groups
- Swedish dialects differ substantially — Stockholm Swedish is very different from Gothenburg or Malmö
- Swedish has six major dialect groups: Norrland, Svealand, Gotland, Götaland, South Swedish (Scanian), and East Swedish. Stockholm Swedish (Svealand) differs from Gothenburg Swedish in prosody and vowel quality, and Malmö Swedish (Scanian) is the most divergent, with influence from Danish prosody. A deaf traveler calibrated to Stockholm Swedish arrives in Gothenburg or Malmö and finds a different phonological landscape at hotel desks and train ticket windows.
Swedish-English code-switching
- Swedish speakers in cities switch to English mid-sentence without visual signal
- Swedish urban professionals — particularly hotel staff, airport employees, and tour guides in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö — switch between Swedish and English within sentences continuously. At Arlanda or a Stockholm hotel check-in, a staff member may begin in Swedish, transition to English for technical or customer-facing vocabulary, and return to Swedish — all without any visible transition. A deaf traveler reading Swedish lip-shapes must suddenly apply English phoneme mappings mid-sentence.

Sweden has among the highest self-reported hearing loss rates in Europe. EuroTrak data consistently places Sweden — alongside Denmark and the UK — at the top of European countries for reported hearing difficulty. A 2020 epidemiological study using Swedish national survey data found that hearing difficulties are more common in men (13.1%) than women (9.8%) and increase sharply with age. A separate study found that 36% of people with moderate-to-severe hearing loss in Sweden used hearing aids — leaving the majority navigating public life without amplification. A study on severe-to-profound hearing loss in the adult Swedish population found a significant cohort who could benefit from cochlear implantation but had not yet been evaluated.
Sweden's travel infrastructure — including Stockholm Arlanda (handling over 28 million passengers per year), Gothenburg Landvetter, SJ's high-speed X2000 network, and SL's metro, tram, and commuter rail network across Greater Stockholm — communicates critical travel information through spoken Swedish PA announcements. Real-time captioning of announcements is not a standard feature on SJ trains or at Swedish airports. Stockholm's tourist sites — the Vasa Museum, Gamla Stan, Djurgården's open-air museum Skansen, the ABBA Museum — attract millions of visitors annually; guided tours are conducted verbally in Swedish without captioning infrastructure.
Captio AI captions Swedish in real time — whether a gate announcement at Arlanda, an SJ platform PA at Stockholm Central, or a guide at the Vasa Museum — so a deaf traveler in Sweden follows every instruction and announcement without depending on audio infrastructure built without them in mind.

Not a product

"Gothenburg Swedish sounds different from Stockholm Swedish — the pitch accent is different and I find it harder to lip-read than my home dialect. Captio AI captioned the hotel receptionist's Gothenburg Swedish accurately. Every check-in detail appeared on screen."
"Scanian Swedish at Malmö Central is close to Danish prosody — very different from Stockholm Swedish. Captio AI captioned the ticket agent correctly. I got the right train across the Øresund Bridge without confusion."
"The guide at the Vasa Museum spoke Swedish at full conversational speed with occasional English for foreign visitors. Captio AI captioned both. I followed the full story of the warship — the engineering failure, the king, the 333 years underwater."
