Built for a world that announces everything by sound
Captions any spoken exchange in real time
Airport staff, hotel receptionists, taxi drivers, tour guides. Hold the phone toward whoever is speaking and read the captions — in any setting, in any country.
60+ languages — no language barrier
Live Translator captions and translates in real time. They speak their language — you read in yours. For every country, every language, no manual setup between interactions.
Works anywhere with a data connection
Wi-Fi or mobile data. A local SIM or roaming plan keeps Captio AI running in any country — airports, hotels, rural areas, and everywhere in between.
Handles travel environments
Noisy airports, busy stations, echoing hotel lobbies. Captio AI is built for real environments — not quiet controlled rooms. It captions through the ambient noise of travel.
Discreet in any public setting
Hold the phone or place it near the speaker. Captio AI runs quietly and draws no attention — useful in customs, immigration, and any formal travel interaction where discretion matters.
Private by default
Travel conversations — customs declarations, hotel bookings, personal exchanges — are never stored or shared. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately.
Why Hindi is hard to understand
Retroflex consonants
- Tongue-back sounds that vanish on the lips
- Hindi uses retroflex consonants — /ʈ/, /ɖ/, /ɳ/, /ɽ/ — produced with the tongue curled back toward the palate. At an airport counter or train station, these sounds give no visual signal at the lips. A deaf traveler watches the speaker's mouth and sees the same position for 'ta' and 'ṭa', two completely different sounds.
Aspirated pairs
- Six pairs of stops that look identical
- Hindi distinguishes unaspirated and aspirated stops across six positions: /p/-/ph/, /b/-/bh/, /t/-/th/, /d/-/dh/, /k/-/kh/, /g/-/gh/. All twelve sounds produce nearly identical lip shapes. A customs officer saying 'baggage' or 'passport' — the aspiration that separates words is entirely invisible to a deaf lip-reader.
Dialect variation
- Hindi changes city to city
- The Hindi a traveler encounters in Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, or Jaipur sounds markedly different. Mumbaiya Hindi mixes Marathi substrate, Bihari Hindi carries its own vowel quality, and Rajasthani-influenced Hindi drops syllables in casual speech. A single trip across India can present a deaf traveler with several distinct lip-reading challenges.
Fast colloquial speech
- Rapid reduction in busy travel settings
- In crowded stations and busy airport queues, Hindi speakers reduce their articulation to match the pace — syllables merge, vowels shorten, and the careful enunciation that aids lip-reading disappears entirely in fast-paced travel interactions.
Hindi-English code-switching
- Two languages, unpredictable switches
- Urban India blends Hindi and English constantly — 'aapka boarding pass?' or 'train platform number four pe hai'. A deaf traveler must lip-read across two phonological systems without warning. The code-switch can happen mid-sentence at a check-in counter or in a PA announcement.

India carries one of the world's largest hearing loss burdens. According to the World Health Organization, 63 million people in India suffer from a significant auditory loss — around 6.3% of the population. The country's audiometrist-to-population ratio is approximately 1 per 500,000 people, and the speech therapist-to-deaf population ratio stands at around 1 per 200 — figures that reflect the severe shortage of diagnostic and rehabilitation infrastructure for the country's deaf and hard of hearing population.
India's travel infrastructure — airports, railways, and bus terminals — relies almost entirely on audio PA systems for critical passenger information. Indian Railways, the largest rail network in the world by passenger volume, communicates platform changes, delays, and boarding through PA announcements with no standardised real-time visual equivalent. For a deaf traveler navigating a busy terminus in Mumbai or Kolkata, a missed announcement means a missed train with consequences that cascade across an entire journey.
Captio AI captions Hindi speech in real time — whether a platform PA, a ticket counter attendant, or an immigration officer at IGI — so a deaf traveler in India follows every instruction, change, and question without relying on infrastructure that was never built with them in mind.
