Slovenian Railways (SŽ) and Ljubljana's city buses announce platforms and stops in Slovenian. Captio AI captions the ticket-counter exchange and the platform PA in real time so you board the right service.
A receptionist in Ljubljana's old town or a guesthouse by Lake Bled explaining check-in, breakfast, and the walk to the castle in Slovenian. Place Captio AI on the desk and follow every word.

Built for a world that announces everything by sound
Captions any spoken exchange in real time
Airport staff, hotel receptionists, taxi drivers, tour guides. Hold the phone toward whoever is speaking and read the captions — in any setting, in any country.
60+ languages — no language barrier
Live Translator captions and translates in real time. They speak their language — you read in yours. For every country, every language, no manual setup between interactions.
Works anywhere with a data connection
Wi-Fi or mobile data. A local SIM or roaming plan keeps Captio AI running in any country — airports, hotels, rural areas, and everywhere in between.
Handles travel environments
Noisy airports, busy stations, echoing hotel lobbies. Captio AI is built for real environments — not quiet controlled rooms. It captions through the ambient noise of travel.
Discreet in any public setting
Hold the phone or place it near the speaker. Captio AI runs quietly and draws no attention — useful in customs, immigration, and any formal travel interaction where discretion matters.
Private by default
Travel conversations — customs declarations, hotel bookings, personal exchanges — are never stored or shared. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately.
Why Slovenian is hard to understand
Pitch accent
- The tonal distinction built into the standard
- Standard Slovenian has a tonemic variety — used in formal broadcasting and centred on the Ljubljana region — where stressed syllables carry high or low pitch that can separate two words. This tonal contrast is pure pitch and produces no lip or jaw movement. At a Ljubljana counter, a deaf traveler sees identical mouth shapes for words the tone keeps apart.
Vowel reduction and the schwa
- Unstressed vowels flatten into a neutral sound
- Slovenian reduces unstressed vowels heavily, and the neutral schwa appears where a written vowel suggests something fuller. Words look different from their spelling, and in the Carinthian and other dialects the reduction goes further still — collapsing syllables that a lip-reader would otherwise use to segment a word.
Dense dialect landscape
- Seven dialect groups in a very small country
- Slovenia packs roughly seven major dialect groups and dozens of local dialects into a country of two million people — one of the densest dialect landscapes in Europe. A deaf traveler moving from Ljubljana to the coast, the Alps, or the Prekmurje plain meets markedly different vowel systems and, in some areas, no pitch accent at all.
The dual number
- A whole grammatical category on word endings
- Slovenian keeps the dual — a distinct set of forms for exactly two of something — marked through endings on nouns and verbs. These endings, carrying grammatical detail found in almost no other European language, sit at the ends of words where fast speech clips them and lip-reading is least reliable.
Consonant clusters
- Clusters and syllabic consonants at speed
- Slovenian allows demanding consonant clusters and even words built around syllabic consonants with no vowel — the country's own name, Slovenija, and words like 'trg' (square) or 'vrt' (garden). At a busy station these compress into a stream that offers a lip-reader almost no visual footing.

Around one in five people across Europe lives with some hearing loss, and in Slovenia the visible core of the deaf community is small and precisely known: roughly 1,500 people use Slovenian Sign Language, about 1,000 of them as a mother tongue, while some 75,000 Slovenians wear a hearing aid and around 450 use a cochlear implant. Behind those figures sits a much larger group with milder or age-related loss, in a country of just two million people where the deaf and hard of hearing have been organised since 1931 — one of the oldest disability organisations in the nation.
Slovenia is a world leader in the legal status of sign language: it recognised Slovenian Sign Language use in 2002 and, in 2021, enshrined it in the Constitution — becoming the first country in the world to also give constitutional recognition to the language of the deafblind. Yet a persistent shortage of interpreters and the absence of real-time captioning at transport hubs mean that recognition has not reached the platform or the gate. Ljubljana Airport, Slovenian Railways, and the bus network that reaches Bled, Bohinj, and the Alps all run on spoken Slovenian announcements.
Captio AI captions Slovenian in real time — a boarding call at Ljubljana Airport, an SŽ platform announcement, a guesthouse check-in by Lake Bled — so a deaf traveler in Slovenia follows every change and question without depending on infrastructure built without them in mind.

People love Captio AI
"Ljubljana Airport is small but the calls are still fast Slovenian and English, and the pitch accent means words trip me up. Captio AI captioned the gate change straight away. I read it and walked to the gate instead of standing under the speaker guessing."
"Guesthouse owners around Bled speak fast, and the Gorenjska dialect is not the textbook Slovenian I lip-read best. Captio AI captioned the whole check-in — the room, the boat to the island, the walk up to the castle — without me adjusting a thing."
"Maribor station announces platform changes fast and only over the PA. I missed a train to Ljubljana once because I could not catch it. Now Captio AI shows me the announcement the instant it plays and I make every connection."
"The Postojna Cave guide spoke quick Slovenian about the formations and the little cave train. I would have caught almost none of it in the echo. With Captio AI I read the whole tour — the stalactites, the human fish, the underground railway."
