Why Marathi is hard to understand
Four-way consonant contrast
- Voicing and aspiration invisible on the lips
- Marathi has a four-way contrast in stops: voiceless unaspirated, voiceless aspirated, voiced unaspirated, and voiced aspirated. At a Mumbai railway counter or an airport check-in desk, the aspiration and voicing distinctions that separate words in Marathi are almost entirely acoustic — they produce no visible lip-level difference that a deaf traveler can read.
Retroflex consonants
- Tongue-back sounds invisible at the lips
- Like other Indo-Aryan languages, Marathi uses retroflex consonants /ʈ/, /ɖ/, /ɳ/ produced with the tongue curled back. These are invisible at the lips. At a Pune station or a Mumbai hotel desk, the distinction between dental and retroflex consonants that changes word meaning leaves no trace a deaf traveler can see on the speaker's face.
Nasalized vowels
- Nasalization carried at the palate, not the lips
- Marathi uses phonemically distinct nasalized vowels — contrast pairs that differ only in the nasal quality produced at the soft palate. At a hotel reception or a railway ticket window, these vowel distinctions that separate words are invisible on the speaker's lips.
Dialect diversity
- Varhadi, Kokan, and Khandesh Marathi all differ
- The Varhadi dialect of Vidarbha, the Kokan Marathi of the coastal region, and the Ahirani of Khandesh each have distinct vowel qualities, prosody, and phonology. A deaf traveler lip-reading a hotel receptionist in Nagpur may find the same Marathi words look different from a ticket clerk in Ratnagiri.
Marathi-Hindi code-switching
- Mumbai Marathi blends seamlessly with Hindi
- In Mumbai, Marathi and Hindi mix so freely that the combined register — sometimes called Mumbaiya Hindi — is often indistinguishable from either parent language. At Mumbai's CSIA airport or Central Railway terminals, staff shift between Marathi, Hindi, and English within the same sentence, requiring a deaf traveler to lip-read across three phonological systems.
