Built for a world that announces everything by sound
Captions any spoken exchange in real time
Airport staff, hotel receptionists, taxi drivers, tour guides. Hold the phone toward whoever is speaking and read the captions — in any setting, in any country.
60+ languages — no language barrier
Live Translator captions and translates in real time. They speak their language — you read in yours. For every country, every language, no manual setup between interactions.
Works anywhere with a data connection
Wi-Fi or mobile data. A local SIM or roaming plan keeps Captio AI running in any country — airports, hotels, rural areas, and everywhere in between.
Handles travel environments
Noisy airports, busy stations, echoing hotel lobbies. Captio AI is built for real environments — not quiet controlled rooms. It captions through the ambient noise of travel.
Discreet in any public setting
Hold the phone or place it near the speaker. Captio AI runs quietly and draws no attention — useful in customs, immigration, and any formal travel interaction where discretion matters.
Private by default
Travel conversations — customs declarations, hotel bookings, personal exchanges — are never stored or shared. Audio is processed in real time and discarded immediately.
Why German is hard to understand
Guttural sounds
- Back-of-throat consonants leave nothing on the lips
- German's characteristic ach-Laut /x/ — in 'Bach', 'Nacht', 'noch' — and ich-Laut /ç/ — in 'ich', 'Milch', 'mich' — are produced at the back of the oral cavity or at the velum, with no visible lip or jaw movement. The uvular /ʁ/ (the German r) adds a third sound produced at the uvula and invisible on the lips. At a Frankfurt gate or a Munich hotel desk, these are some of the most frequent consonants in German — and entirely unreadable.
Final devoicing
- Word ends change their identity in connected speech
- German devoices all obstruents word-finally: 'Hund' (dog) is pronounced [hʊnt], 'Weg' (way) becomes [ve:k], 'Rad' (bicycle) becomes [ra:t]. For a deaf traveler at a German customs desk or train station, the word ending that distinguishes 'Zug' (train) from 'Tuch' (cloth), or 'Bund' from 'bunt', is identical on the speaker's lips.
Swiss German and Bavarian
- Regional varieties nearly unintelligible from standard German
- Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch) is a collection of dialects mutually unintelligible with standard Hochdeutsch — even German native speakers from the north find Zurich German hard to understand. Bavarian German has distinct vowel shifts and vocabulary. A deaf traveler lip-reading in Zurich faces a completely different challenge from one in Hamburg, even though both nominally speak German.
Consonant clusters
- Dense sequences compress in fast speech
- German forms some of the densest consonant clusters in European languages: 'Herbst-' (autumn), 'Angst' (anxiety), 'strickt' (strict). At speed in a travel environment, these clusters merge and individual consonants disappear, leaving only gross jaw and lip movement that gives a deaf traveler almost no phonemic information.
Compound words
- Long chains that dissolve on the lips
- German compounds like 'Flughafenabfertigungsschalter' (airport check-in desk) or 'Reisegepäck' (travel luggage) chain multiple morphemes with no pause. In fast travel speech these long words produce very little distinguishable lip movement — a deaf traveler sees a continuous blur where a native speaker hears multiple distinct components.

Data from the Gutenberg Health Study, published in 2023, provides the most comprehensive recent picture of hearing loss prevalence in Germany: 22.5% of the study population had mild hearing loss, 8.3% moderate loss, and 2.8% severe loss. Profound hearing loss was found in 0.9% and deafness in 0.1% of participants. Of Germany's approximately 84 million residents, an estimated 235,000 people are deaf or hard of hearing at a level that significantly affects daily communication. Germany ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in 2009, and Deutsche Gebärdensprache (DGS — German Sign Language) is legally protected.
Despite the legal framework, Germany's travel infrastructure — Deutsche Bahn, airports, and intercity bus networks — communicates primarily through spoken PA announcements. While some major Deutsche Bahn stations have visual departure boards, real-time captioning of spoken announcements (delays, platform changes, short-notice updates) is not standardised. Additionally, Germany's strong cultural and clinical preference for cochlear implants means the country's deaf population is frequently steered toward spoken German rehabilitation — sometimes at the expense of sign language access and community support. For deaf and hard of hearing travelers at Frankfurt or Berlin airports, the PA system remains the primary channel for critical travel information.
Captio AI captions German speech in real time — whether a Deutsche Bahn platform announcement, a Munich hotel receptionist, or a customs officer at Frankfurt International — so a deaf traveler across Germany and Austria follows every instruction and exchange without depending on audio infrastructure built without them in mind.
