Use Cases

Every situation covered

Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.

🍽️Dinner with friends

A dinner with friends in a Ljubljana restavracija, everyone speaking at pace in the Ljubljana dialect and the conversation running well past when the plates are cleared.

💼Business lunches

A business lunch in a Maribor gostilna where Štajerska pronunciation mixes with standard Slovenian and the topic moves quickly.

Cafe catch-ups

Coffee in a Ljubljana kavarna, the barista chatting with regulars in local slang while you wait for a free table.

🌍Restaurants abroad

Ordering in a Primorska restaurant near Trieste where the server switches between Slovenian and Italian and you're not always sure which language the specials are being listed in.

🎂Celebrations and group meals

A birthday dinner with family — three generations around one table, grandparents in dialect, the youngest generation slipping in English loanwords.

❤️Dates and one-on-one meals

A quiet dinner for two in a village gostilna where soft voices, wooden-room acoustics, and an unfamiliar dialect make every word a challenge.

Captio AI in everyday use
Why Captio AI

Built for the table — however noisy the room

Follows the person across the table

Point the microphone toward the person speaking and Captio AI captions them through the background noise. You do not need to face them, watch their lips, or lean in.

Works through restaurant noise

Restaurant noise averages 80 dBA — well above comfortable conversation level. Captio AI is built for these real environments, not quiet controlled rooms.

Place it and forget it

Put the phone on the table between you and the other person, microphone facing them. You glance at it as needed. No adjusting between sentences, no managing the setup.

No asking for repeats during the meal

Every word appears in real time. If you missed something, the caption is there — you do not need to stop the conversation and ask anyone to say it again.

Any language

For restaurants abroad, multilingual dining companions, or waitstaff who speak a different language. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.

Discreet

A phone on a restaurant table is unremarkable. Captio AI runs quietly, the screen faces you, and most dining companions adapt naturally once they understand what it does.

Slovenian

Why Slovenian is hard to understand

Extreme dialect fragmentation

  • 50+ subdialects in a small country
  • Slovenian has 7 major dialect groups and more than 50 subdialects compressed into a country smaller than Switzerland. The standard language (based on Central Slovenian) differs substantially from Gorenjska, Štajerska, Primorska, and Koroška speech, meaning a deaf diner in Ljubljana may encounter a phonological landscape quite different from what they learned when travelling for a meal.

Phonemic tone in central dialects

  • Tonal contrasts invisible on the lips
  • In a north-south band of central Slovenian dialects — Upper and Lower Carniolan, parts of Carinthian — some words carry phonemic tone. Speakers from these areas retain tonal contrasts that a deaf person cannot recover from the lips, requiring context to disambiguate at restaurant pace.

Schwa reduction

  • Unstressed syllables disappear in fast speech
  • Slovenian's neutral central vowel /ə/ reduces drastically in fast speech. In casual restaurant conversation, unstressed syllables compress around this reduction, shortening words to near-fragments that look unlike their careful-speech equivalents on the lips.

Slovenian-German contact (Carinthia)

  • German words appear mid-sentence
  • In the Koroška / Carinthia region, Slovenian and Austrian German mix freely in everyday conversation. At a restaurant table a deaf Slovenian speaker may encounter German-origin words mid-sentence, temporarily breaking the expected phonological pattern.

Primorska-Italian contact mixing

  • Italian and Friulian blend into restaurant speech
  • In the Primorska region and around Trieste, Slovenian, Italian, and Friulian intersect. Restaurant menus, food names, and casual table talk blend phonological systems — making visual parsing uncertain for a deaf person not immersed in that contact variety.

The Challenge

Hearing loss in Slovenia: small country, thin provision

Slovenia's population of approximately 2.1 million means that even at European hearing loss prevalence rates — estimated at 15–20% of the adult population by GBD 2019 data — roughly 300,000–400,000 Slovenians live with some degree of meaningful hearing difficulty. Slovenia is a member of the European Union of the Deaf, but the scale of the deaf community in a small country with many regional dialects means that provision of specialised services, including Slovenian Sign Language (Znakovni jezik) interpretation, can be thinly spread outside the capital.

European research on hearing loss in small EU member states (PMC12101339) consistently highlights the same pattern: audiology services and hearing aid provision concentrate in urban centres, stigma reduces the rate at which people seek diagnosis, and social participation in settings like restaurants and communal meals is among the first activities affected as hearing loss progresses. The diversity of Slovenian dialects compounds this — a hard of hearing person may manage reasonably well when standard Slovenian is spoken clearly, but find a Primorska or Gorenjska restaurant conversation far harder to follow.

Captio AI captions live Slovenian conversation in real time, making a table at any gostilna — in Ljubljana or in a village in Koroška — feel like a conversation you belong to, not one you endure in silence.
