Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.
Dinner with friends at a traditional Norwegian restaurant or matpub in Oslo or Bergen, where the conversation flows freely over gravlaks and local cheese and the background noise of a full dining room fills the room.
Business lunches in Oslo's business districts where formal Norwegian mixes with English and following client detail across a busy restaurant table matters.
Café catch-ups at a Norwegian kafé or coffee bar, where the clink of cups and nearby conversations compete with the person sitting across from you.
Eating out in Norway as a visitor, where Norwegian menus and server recommendations arrive in local dialect — and each region's dialect sounds quite different from the next.
Family celebrations at a Norwegian restaurant — julefrokost Christmas lunches, birthday dinners, confirmation celebrations — where multiple conversations happen at once and Norwegian pop music fills the room.
Dates at an Oslo harbour restaurant or a Bergen fish market café where you want to follow every word without asking your partner to repeat themselves over the ambient noise.

Built for the table — however noisy the room
Follows the person across the table
Point the microphone toward the person speaking and Captio AI captions them through the background noise. You do not need to face them, watch their lips, or lean in.
Works through restaurant noise
Restaurant noise averages 80 dBA — well above comfortable conversation level. Captio AI is built for these real environments, not quiet controlled rooms.
Place it and forget it
Put the phone on the table between you and the other person, microphone facing them. You glance at it as needed. No adjusting between sentences, no managing the setup.
No asking for repeats during the meal
Every word appears in real time. If you missed something, the caption is there — you do not need to stop the conversation and ask anyone to say it again.
Any language
For restaurants abroad, multilingual dining companions, or waitstaff who speak a different language. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.
Discreet
A phone on a restaurant table is unremarkable. Captio AI runs quietly, the screen faces you, and most dining companions adapt naturally once they understand what it does.
Why Norwegian is hard to understand
Pitch accent — two tones invisible on the lips
- Norwegian distinguishes words by tone with nothing to see
- Norwegian, like Swedish, has lexical pitch accent distinguishing words by two tone patterns — Tone 1 (acute) and Tone 2 (grave). Minimal pairs like bønder (farmers) and bønner (beans) are identical on the lips but mean completely different things. At a Norwegian restaurant table, this tonal distinction is entirely lost to lip-reading, yet it runs through the language constantly.
No official spoken standard
- Every dialect is equally valid — which means every dialect is possible
- Unlike most European languages, Norwegian has no official spoken standard. All dialects are officially equally valid, which means the phonological system at a Norwegian restaurant table varies substantially depending on where speakers come from. Bergen, Trondheim, Tromsø, and Oslo sound genuinely different — and all are correct Norwegian.
Extreme dialect variation
- Bergen sounds nothing like Tromsø or Stavanger
- Norwegian dialects differ from one another more than most national language varieties. Vowel qualities, consonant realizations, and basic vocabulary differ by region. A deaf person accustomed to Oslo phonology faces a genuinely different acoustic and lip environment at a restaurant in Bergen, Tromsø, or Kristiansand.
Retroflexion in Eastern Norwegian
- Oslo and Eastern Norwegian merge consonant clusters invisibly
- Oslo and Eastern Norwegian merge /rd/, /rl/, /rn/, /rs/, and /rt/ into retroflex sounds — produced with the tongue curled back behind the teeth with no additional visible lip shape. A deaf person watching lips sees what appears to be the same articulation across these different clusters, with no visible distinction between them.
Norwegian-English code-switching
- English words appear constantly in everyday Norwegian
- Norway has extremely high English proficiency and English words appear constantly in everyday Norwegian conversation — in menus, casual speech, and business discussions. At a modern Oslo restaurant or a Bergen seafood spot, Norwegian and English mix without notice, confronting a deaf lip-reader with two phonological systems alternating throughout the meal.

Norway has some of the most comprehensive data on hearing loss in the world, generated by the large population-based HUNT study. The estimated prevalence of permanent hearing loss in Norwegian adults is approximately 15%, while self-reported hearing difficulties run as high as 32%. Among adults aged 20 to 44 years, 3% have hearing loss; this rises to 15% in the 45 to 64 age group and 64% in those over 64 (PMC10867996, HUNT Hearing Study). Hearing aid use among those with disabling hearing loss increased from 46.3% in 1997 to 64.4% in 2018 — a meaningful improvement, but one that still leaves over a third of the most severely affected Norwegians without devices.
Norwegian Sign Language (Norsk tegnspråk, NTS) was officially recognized as Norway's national sign language on January 1, 2022 — a formal acknowledgement of a language used by the approximately 11,000 members of the Norwegian Deaf community. Despite this progressive framework, restaurant environments remain inaccessible. High ambient noise, no captioning infrastructure, and no legal obligation on hospitality venues to provide communication support mean that deaf Norwegians navigate dinner tables — where every dialect sounds different — without the tools that hearing peers take for granted.
Captio AI captions Norwegian conversation in real time — at an Oslo restaurant, a Bergen fish market café, or a julefrokost family dinner — so a deaf person can follow every word from the table without needing a sign language interpreter.

"Norwegian pitch accent is invisible on the lips — bønder and bønner look identical. Captio AI distinguishes them every single time. That alone makes the whole restaurant experience different."
