Designed for the real moments that matter — not just quiet controlled environments.
A dinner in a Tallinn old-town restoran, friends catching up in fast colloquial Estonian while the server moves between Estonian and Russian with different tables.
A business lunch in Tallinn where colleagues use formal Estonian but slip in English project terms constantly.
Coffee in a Tartu kohvik, a weekend favourite, the conversations around you in South Estonian dialect and the barista in standard Estonian.
Ordering in a restaurant in Narva where the menu is in Estonian but most of the conversation around you is Russian.
A family celebration at a long table, the older generation in formal Estonian and the younger switching to English when they forget a word.
A quiet dinner for two where Q3-length contrasts in softly spoken words make every sentence a guessing game without captions.

Built for the table — however noisy the room
Follows the person across the table
Point the microphone toward the person speaking and Captio AI captions them through the background noise. You do not need to face them, watch their lips, or lean in.
Works through restaurant noise
Restaurant noise averages 80 dBA — well above comfortable conversation level. Captio AI is built for these real environments, not quiet controlled rooms.
Place it and forget it
Put the phone on the table between you and the other person, microphone facing them. You glance at it as needed. No adjusting between sentences, no managing the setup.
No asking for repeats during the meal
Every word appears in real time. If you missed something, the caption is there — you do not need to stop the conversation and ask anyone to say it again.
Any language
For restaurants abroad, multilingual dining companions, or waitstaff who speak a different language. Live Translator captions and translates in real time with no manual setup.
Discreet
A phone on a restaurant table is unremarkable. Captio AI runs quietly, the screen faces you, and most dining companions adapt naturally once they understand what it does.
Why Estonian is hard to understand
Three-way phonemic quantity
- Short, long, and overlong look the same
- Estonian is one of very few languages in the world that contrasts three degrees of vowel and consonant length — short (Q1), long (Q2), and overlong (Q3). These distinctions carry lexical meaning but are entirely invisible on the lips. A deaf diner tracking Estonian conversation can see the same articulation repeated across three different words with three different meanings.
North-South Estonian divide
- Võro and Seto sound unlike standard Estonian
- Standard Estonian is based on northern varieties, while southern dialects — Võro and Seto — differ substantially in vowel inventory, consonant inventory, and morphology. A deaf person trained on standard Estonian encountering Võro-influenced speech in a Võru or Põlva restaurant faces a phonological system quite different from what they learned.
Consonant gradation
- The same word looks different across grammatical forms
- Estonian, like Finnish, alternates consonants across grammatical forms in ways that mean the visual appearance of a word root shifts depending on grammatical context. In fast restaurant conversation, this means a word can look different in the same exchange depending on its grammatical role.
Colloquial vowel reduction
- Casual register differs sharply from formal Estonian
- Colloquial Tallinn Estonian shortens unstressed vowels and deletes word-final /n/ and /s/, making everyday café and restaurant speech look substantially different from formal or broadcast Estonian. A deaf person who learned from careful-speech input may find casual restaurant register confusing.
Estonian-Russian code-switching
- Russian enters mid-sentence in mixed settings
- About 25% of Estonia's population speaks Russian as a first language. In Tallinn's mixed-language restaurants and those in Narva and Ida-Viru, Estonian and Russian shift freely at the table — requiring a deaf Estonian speaker to track two phonological systems simultaneously.

Download on theApp StoreHearing loss in Estonia: small country, consistent barriers
Estonia's population of approximately 1.37 million means its absolute numbers of deaf and hard of hearing people are small by European standards, but the proportion is consistent with regional averages. The GBD 2019 Study found that hearing loss is the fourth leading cause of years lived with disability globally, and in Northern Europe age-related hearing loss is particularly prevalent as populations age. Estonia's 2021 census data indicates a significant share of older residents — the demographic most affected by age-related hearing loss — living outside major urban centres, where audiology services and deaf community support are thinnest.
Estonia's deaf community maintains cultural institutions including the Estonian Association of the Deaf, but the community's relatively small absolute size limits the scale of interpreter provision and accessibility infrastructure. A hard of hearing person in Narva or Ida-Viru faces an additional complexity: the bilingual Estonian-Russian environment of those regions means they must track two phonological systems simultaneously in everyday social settings — a cognitive load that compounds the difficulty of following fast restaurant conversation.
Captio AI captions live Estonian in real time, so any seat at a Tallinn or Tartu restoran means following what's being said — from the first kohv order to the last toast.

Gone the moment it ends
Captio AI processes your audio in real time and discards it immediately. Nothing is recorded. Nothing is kept.
Not a product
Your conversations are not something Captio AI sells, shares, or monetizes — to anyone, for any reason.
