Why German is hard to understand
Pharyngeal articulation
- Sounds made deep in the throat
- Many German consonants — including the uvular /r/ and the /ch/ sounds — are produced far back in the mouth where lips reveal nothing. A waiter reading off the specials uses these sounds constantly, and there is nothing to see on the lips.
Dialect gap
