Hearing accessibility for Hindi speakers
India is estimated to have around 63 million deaf and hard of hearing people, the largest such population in the world by most estimates. The sign language of India's deaf community is Indian Sign Language (ISL), used by around 5 million people. ISL has not been recognized as an official national language, though advocacy for recognition has grown significantly in recent years.
The gap between 63 million people with hearing loss and 5 million ISL users reflects a serious infrastructure shortage. Most deaf and hard of hearing people in India are not sign language users because ISL education is limited, trained interpreters are scarce, and in rural areas structured deaf schooling is often unavailable. India has one of the lowest ratios of sign language interpreters to deaf population in the world.
At a medical appointment, government office, or workplace in Hindi, a hard of hearing person typically has no formal accessibility support available. Consultations are fast, dense with information, and rarely adapted for hearing-impaired patients. This is one of the most commonly described situations where deaf and hard of hearing Hindi speakers face the real cost of the accessibility gap.
