Hearing accessibility for Spanish speakers
Spanish is the official language of more than 20 countries, and each of them has its own distinct sign language. Spain uses Lengua de Signos Española (LSE). Mexico has Lengua de Señas Mexicana (LSM). Argentina has Lengua de Señas Argentina (LSA). Colombia, Chile, Peru, and every other Spanish-speaking country has developed its own sign language, and several are not mutually intelligible with each other.
The origins of these sign languages vary significantly. Some Latin American sign languages were shaped by American Sign Language. Others have roots in French Sign Language. Venezuelan sign language traces back to LSE from Spain. There is no shared sign language that connects deaf communities across the Spanish-speaking world the way spoken Spanish connects hearing people.
For hard of hearing Spanish speakers, the experience varies sharply by location. Major cities like Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Madrid have some sign language infrastructure. In rural Latin America, sign language interpreters in hospitals or schools are rare. A hard of hearing person at a medical appointment in a small town in Colombia or Peru typically has no formal accessibility support available.
