Hà Nội dialect
Northern Vietnamese — the Hanoi variety that serves as the basis for Standard Vietnamese. Used in national broadcasting, education, and official communication. Nghệ An dialect
Spoken in Nghệ An and Hà Tĩnh provinces — a transitional North-Central variety with a strongly distinct intonation, vowel system, and vocabulary that sets it apart from both Standard Northern and Central Vietnamese. Huế dialect

Hearing accessibility for Vietnamese speakers
Vietnam has around 1 million deaf people and three distinct regional sign languages, centered in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Haiphong. In 2020, the government unified these under a national Vietnamese Sign Language (VSL) standard, with the regional varieties remaining as dialects. Both the Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi sign languages absorbed French Sign Language vocabulary during the colonial period, which is still visible in modern VSL.
Despite the 2020 standardization, practical accessibility is very limited. Most deaf people in Vietnam still have restricted access to basic services including healthcare, education, and public transportation. Sign language interpreters in hospitals or government offices are rare across the country.
For hard of hearing Vietnamese speakers, the north-south language divide adds complexity. Vietnamese spoken in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City has distinct tonal patterns and vocabulary. A hard of hearing person who moves between regions may find familiar words pronounced quite differently.
