The short answer

Use CaptionCall if you live in the US and need captions on phone calls: CaptionCall Mobile is free through the FCC for eligible users, and Sorenson also provides a captioned home phone at no cost. Use Captio AI for conversations with people in the same room, which CaptionCall doesn't caption, or if you live outside the US. In the US you may want both: one for calls, one for the room, where on iPhone Captio AI can show who is talking by name.

Choose CaptionCall if

you live in the US and need captions on phone calls, voicemail or 911, on your cell phone or on a free captioned home phone.

Choose Captio AI if

you need captions for people in the same room, want to see where a voice comes from (iPhone 16 and later), need live translation or recordings you can summarise, or you live outside the US.

Key differences

What actually sets them apart

Does CaptionCall caption in-person conversations?

No. CaptionCall says its app only captions calls that go through your CaptionCall number, and none of its pages describe captioning people in the same room. Captio AI is made for that: it captions speech around you through the phone's microphone.

Sources: Why does the app show a different number than mine? (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), What is CaptionCall Mobile? (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI)

Does Captio AI caption phone calls like CaptionCall?

No. CaptionCall captions incoming and outgoing calls, 3-way calls, voicemail and 911 calls, and call forwarding lets you keep your own number. Captio AI is made for speech in the room and does not caption phone or video calls, so the two do different jobs.

Sources: Apple App Store listing, How do I start a 3-way call? (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), How to access Voicemails (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), 911 Emergency Calling with CaptionCall Mobile (Sorenson (CaptionCall)), How to set up Call Forwarding (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), How to set up My Caller ID (CaptionCall Mobile Help Center), Live Captions (Captio AI)

Does CaptionCall use a live captioner?

On the home phone, yes: Sorenson says a live captioning agent connects to each call and corrects the voice recognition. CaptionCall Mobile doesn't use live agents; its captions are automatic, like Captio AI's.

Sources: Does CaptionCall Work on a Cell Phone? Is It Really No Cost? (Sorenson), CaptionCall home page (Sorenson) (Sorenson (CaptionCall)), CaptionCall Mobile (Sorenson) (Sorenson (CaptionCall)), Live Captions (Captio AI)

Which languages does each one caption?

CaptionCall captions calls in English and Spanish. Captio AI captions 60+ languages and translates conversations live, next to the original captions.

Sources: CaptionCall Support (Sorenson) (Sorenson (CaptionCall)), Olelo by Sorenson Rebrands to CaptionCall Mobile (Sorenson), Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI), Live Translator (Captio AI)

Can you use CaptionCall outside the US?

No. Sorenson says CaptionCall and CaptionCall Mobile are available in the United States only, and the app was not found in the UK, Canadian, Mexican, Australian or German App Stores in October 2026. Captio AI is available worldwide on the App Store and Google Play, and an account is optional.

Sorenson gives eligible users a CaptionCall phone with a large caption screen, delivered and set up at no cost. Captio AI is an app for conversations in the room.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Who owns CaptionCall?

Sorenson. CaptionCall Mobile is part of Sorenson, and the FCC lists CaptionCall, LLC as a captioned telephone provider with a Sorenson contact. The app was called Olelo until Sorenson renamed it CaptionCall Mobile in December 2023; on the App Store its seller is still MachineGenius, Inc. Captio AI is a separate app, made for conversations in the room.

Is CaptionCall free?

Yes, for eligible people in the US with hearing loss who need captions to use the phone. There is no subscription: the FCC's fund pays Sorenson for each minute of captions, and you self-certify your hearing loss when you sign up. Captio AI, for conversations in the room, is free with 100 free credits a day in any country, and Captio AI Plus removes the limit.

Can I use CaptionCall for in-person conversations, like at the doctor's office?

No. CaptionCall captions phone calls that go through your CaptionCall number, and its pages don't describe captioning people in the same room. For speech in the room, such as an appointment or a family dinner, you need a live caption app like Captio AI.

Does CaptionCall caption calls in Spanish?

Yes. CaptionCall can caption calls in English and Spanish, and the app itself is in English and Spanish. Captio AI captions conversations in the room in 60+ languages, including Spanish, and translates them live.

Can I use CaptionCall in Canada or the UK?

No. Sorenson says CaptionCall and CaptionCall Mobile are available in the United States only, and the app was not found in the UK or Canadian App Stores in October 2026. Captio AI is available worldwide on the App Store and Google Play.

Does CaptionCall Mobile use a live captioner?

No. Sorenson says CaptionCall Mobile uses automatic speech recognition without a live agent; the CaptionCall home phone connects a live captioning agent to each call. Captio AI's captions are automatic too: it has no human captioners.

Does CaptionCall work without internet?

No. CaptionCall Mobile needs Wi-Fi or mobile data for captions, also for 911 calls. Captio AI needs internet for live captions too; offline it keeps recording and transcribes when the phone is back online.

Do I need both CaptionCall and Captio AI?

If you live in the US, you may: a call-caption service like CaptionCall for phone calls, and a live caption app like Captio AI for people in the same room. At a family dinner, Captio AI on iPhone can show who is talking by name, and on iPhone 16 and later which side the voice comes from. They do different jobs.
