Why Urdu is hard to understand
Aspirated stops
- The puff of air that no screen shows
- Urdu contrasts aspirated and unaspirated stops — p/pʰ, t/tʰ, k/kʰ and more — where the difference is a puff of air with no visible lip cue. On a TV drama or a fast news read, two words that differ only in aspiration look identical on a speaker's face.
Retroflex consonants
- Tongue-curl sounds invisible on screen
- Urdu's retroflex stops — ʈ, ɖ — are made with the tongue curled back and give no signal at the lips. On screen a deaf viewer sees the same shape for a dental and a retroflex consonant, two different sounds that change the word in a scene.
Urdu–English code-switching
- English dropped into Urdu content
- Pakistani TV, dramas, and YouTube mix Urdu and English constantly. A deaf viewer must switch to English phonology on exactly the words that carry the point, then back to Urdu, with no visual warning and no lip to read when the camera cuts away.
Persian–Arabic vocabulary
- Borrowed sounds in formal register
- Formal Urdu — news, prestige drama — draws on Persian and Arabic vocabulary with sounds like q, x, and ɣ made far back in the mouth. These appear in exactly the elevated language of a news read, and they give a lip-reader little to nothing to work with.

Pakistan carries a heavy hearing loss burden: an estimated 14.5 million Pakistanis live with hearing loss, much of it congenital and severe, and late identification is common because newborn hearing screening is not widespread. The country's popular drama and news culture reaches enormous audiences — but almost none of it is captioned for deaf and hard of hearing viewers.
There is no established framework requiring captioning of Urdu television, and dedicated subtitling for deaf viewers is rare across broadcast, streaming, and social platforms. Live news and talk shows go uncaptioned, YouTube auto-captions for Urdu are unreliable, and the constant Urdu–English mixing of Pakistani content is exactly where automated subtitles struggle most. For a deaf Urdu viewer, most of what plays on screen is inaccessible from the audio.
