Why Indonesian is hard to understand

Indonesia has a large hearing-impaired population: around 5.16 million people were recorded with hearing impairments as of 2020, while the central statistics agency found that almost nine million Indonesians over the age of 10 had difficulty hearing. Yet dedicated subtitling for deaf and hard of hearing viewers is only beginning to emerge as a media standard, rather than being an established requirement.
Most of what a deaf Indonesian viewer watches goes uncaptioned in an accessible form. Live news carries no reliable real-time captions, streaming subtitle quality varies, YouTube and short-video content is inconsistently captioned, and the large volume of foreign film and cartoons dubbed into Indonesian leaves a deaf lip-reader with a mouth that does not match the soundtrack. The constant mixing of formal and colloquial Indonesian, plus Javanese and English, is exactly where automated subtitles struggle most.
