Why Turkish is hard to understand
Agglutination
- Long words built from stacked suffixes
- Turkish glues many suffixes onto a root to build a single long word that can carry a whole clause. On a fast news read or a dizi scene, a deaf viewer who misses one suffix in the middle loses the grammatical thread, and there is no lip to read after a cut.
Vowel harmony
- Suffix vowels that shift and blur on screen
- Turkish suffixes change their vowels to harmonise with the root, so the same ending appears in several vowel forms. These unstressed suffix vowels sit at the ends of long words where fast speech weakens them, exactly where the grammar lives and lip-reading is hardest.
Consonant assimilation
- Sounds that change where morphemes meet
- As suffixes attach, Turkish consonants assimilate — a 'd' becomes a 't' after a voiceless sound. A deaf viewer tracking a word sees its consonants shift at the joins, so the same root looks different as it inflects through a scene.
Dubbing and mismatched lips
- Foreign content dubbed into Turkish never matches the mouth
- Turkey dubs much foreign film and TV into Turkish, so the words a viewer hears do not match the lips on screen. For a deaf viewer relying on lip-reading, dubbed content is impossible — the mouth is speaking a different language from the soundtrack.

Congenital hearing loss is relatively common in Turkey, and against the global pattern in which around one in five people has some hearing loss, the country's population of roughly 85 million implies millions living with hearing difficulty. Turkish Sign Language was recognised in 2006, but media accessibility has lagged: researchers have found that despite regulations requiring subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, most channels do not provide adequate subtitling, and sign-language interpreting has been available on only a handful of programmes.
The barriers compound. The illiteracy rate among deaf Turks is far above the national average, which limits how much conventional subtitling helps, and Turkey dubs much of its foreign film and television into Turkish — so a deaf viewer relying on lip-reading gets a mouth that never matches the soundtrack. Live news and the country's hugely popular dizi dramas are inconsistently captioned, and YouTube and social content largely are not.
