Why Polish is hard to understand
Sibilant thicket
- Several s- and sh-like sounds that look identical
- Polish distinguishes a dense set of sibilants — s, sz, ś, and the voiced ż, ź, plus affricates — that sit close together and look almost identical on the lips. On a fast drama or a news read a deaf viewer cannot tell them apart, yet they separate different words.
Consonant clusters
- Dense clusters that compress at speed
- Polish is famous for long consonant clusters where several consonants pile up. On screen these run together into a stream, giving a lip-reader almost no visual footing to segment a word in a fast scene.
Nasal vowels
- ą and ę made in the nose, not on the lips
- Polish has the nasal vowels ą and ę, produced at the soft palate with little visible lip movement. A deaf viewer watching a face misses a nasal contrast that changes the word.
Palatalization
- Softened consonants with barely visible cues
- Polish softens many consonants through palatalization, a tongue-body raising toward the palate that changes meaning but is nearly invisible from the front. A deaf viewer sees the same mouth for a plain and a palatalized consonant that make different words.
Lektor voice-over
- Foreign content read by a single narrator over the original
- Polish television traditionally translates foreign film and TV with lektor — a single narrator reading all the dialogue over the still-audible original soundtrack. For a deaf viewer this is doubly impossible: the lips on screen speak the original language, and there is no caption of the Polish narration at all.

Hearing loss is common across Poland and rises steeply with age, from around 15% among people in their 60s to well over half among the oldest groups, against a European backdrop in which about one in five people has some hearing loss. Poland has required a share of programming — starting at 10% — to carry subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing since 2011, but the country's dominant way of handling foreign content works against deaf viewers.
Poland is a lektor country: most foreign film and TV is translated by a single narrator reading all the dialogue in a flat voice over the still-audible original. Surveys show that around 95% of deaf and hard of hearing Poles prefer subtitles — because lektor gives them nothing at all, the lips on screen speaking one language while an uncaptioned narrator speaks another. Live news lags, streaming and social video vary, and the deaf viewer is left stranded across most of the schedule.
