Why Bengali is hard to understand
Aspirated pairs

- Bengali distinguishes aspirated and unaspirated stops across six positions — p/ph, b/bh, t/th, d/dh, k/kh, g/gh. The aspiration is a puff of air with no lip cue, so on a TV serial or a fast news read all twelve sounds look like six on a speaker's face.
Nasalized vowels
- Nasal contrasts made at the soft palate
- Bengali, especially the eastern variety spoken in Bangladesh, makes heavy use of nasalized vowels. Nasalization happens at the soft palate with almost no visible difference at the lips, so a deaf viewer watching a drama sees no signal for a contrast that changes the word.
East–West divide on screen
- Dhaka Bengali and Kolkata Bengali both stream
- Bangladeshi and West Bengal content differ in vowel quality, intonation, and several phonemes. A deaf viewer calibrated to one variety finds the same words look different when a Dhaka serial or a Kolkata film comes on, and the face on a phone screen is too small to lip-read anyway.
Bengali–English code-switching

Bangladesh carries one of South Asia's heaviest hearing loss burdens: research estimates that around 9.6% of the population — some 13.7 million people — are deaf or hard of hearing with a loss of 40 dB or more, and a further third have some degree of hearing loss. Across the border in West Bengal, a large Bengali-speaking population shares the same media, and the same barrier.
There is no established framework requiring captioning of Bengali television, and dedicated subtitling for deaf and hard of hearing viewers is rare on both sides of the border. Live news goes uncaptioned, streaming subtitle quality is inconsistent, YouTube auto-captions for Bengali are unreliable, and the constant Bengali–English mixing of urban content is exactly where automated subtitles struggle most.
