Why Greek is hard to understand
Dental fricatives
- The θ and δ sounds with almost no visible movement
- Greek relies on θ (as in 'thin') and δ (as in 'this'), made with the tongue between the teeth and producing very little visible lip movement. On a TV drama or a news read a deaf viewer misses exactly the sounds that carry the meaning of a word.
Velar fricatives
- The χ and γ sounds made at the back of the mouth
- Greek has the fricatives χ and γ, produced far back in the mouth with no lip cue. On screen these give a lip-reader nothing to work with, yet they distinguish common words.
Mobile stress
- Stress that moves and changes meaning
- Modern Greek has variable, meaning-bearing stress that moves between forms of a word. A deaf viewer trying to anchor a word by its stressed syllable finds the anchor shifts as the speaker inflects it, with the stress carried in pitch, not on the lips.
Cypriot dialect on screen
- Mainland and Cypriot Greek differ
- Greek-language film and TV span mainland and Cypriot Greek, and Cypriot has consonant gemination and unique diphthongs the mainland lacks. A deaf viewer calibrated to Athenian Greek meets different shapes on a Cypriot production.
Greek–English code-switching
- English dropped into Greek content

Greece gathers comparatively little national data on hearing loss, and researchers have found that deaf and hard of hearing Greeks are systematically left out of health policy, with measurably poorer health-related quality of life than the general population. Against a European backdrop in which around one in five people has some hearing loss, a substantial audience depends on captions to follow Greek media.
Provision is narrow. Greece has offered subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing only since 2006, historically through a single source and requiring special equipment, and today the public broadcaster's streaming platform marks only selected programmes with deaf-specific captions, alongside a sign-language news channel. Live news lags, commercial and streaming subtitle quality varies, and social and short-video content is largely uncaptioned — while the dental and velar fricatives that make Greek hard to lip-read leave a deaf viewer stranded wherever a caption is missing.
