The short answer

Use Tolkcontact when a person should do the interpreting: a sign language interpreter by video without an appointment, phone calls through KPN Teletolk, and booked writing interpreters (schrijftolken), paid by your health insurer and UWV interpreting hours if you are eligible. Use Captio AI when nobody was booked: open it and what people around you say appears as text, in Dutch or 60+ other languages, with no booking and no opening hours. Many deaf and hard of hearing people in the Netherlands will want both.

Choose Tolkcontact if

you sign in NGT, want a human interpreter rather than automatic text, need to phone through KPN Teletolk or reach 112 by text, or have UWV interpreting hours to use.

Choose Captio AI if

you read rather than sign, need text for a conversation nobody planned, want it to run past 20 minutes or after 22:00, or want to keep and summarise what was said.

Tolk op afstand connects you with a Sign Language of the Netherlands interpreter by video, without an appointment, seven days a week from 7:00 to 22:00, for up to 20 minutes per conversation. Sign language calls through KPN Teletolk run at the same hours.

Tolkcontact
Partly: Through interpreters: NGT by video, or a booked schrijftolk

With Tolk op afstand, a Sign Language of the Netherlands (NGT) interpreter joins by video when you're with a hearing person, in sign language, not text. For live text you book a writing interpreter (schrijftolk) through mijn.tolkcontact.nl, who types everything said onto a tablet, in person or by video. Writing interpreters can't be called on the spot through the app.

Captions phone callsCaptio AI

Tolkcontact
Yes, KPN Teletolk relay; own 085 number

Through KPN Teletolk you call and get called in text (24 hours a day) or Sign Language of the Netherlands (7:00 to 22:00), and can also speak yourself; an operator voices what you type or sign and turns the reply into text or sign language. You get a personal 085 number. 112 can be called by voice or text, answered in text.

Tolkcontact
Yes: Insurer pays app; UWV interpreting hours

Health insurers pay for the app. Interpreters are paid from interpreting hours granted by UWV: 30 a year for private situations (168 if deafblind), 15% of working time for employees, and 1,000 a year at school or in higher education (1,600 in MBO), funded by three ministries. In private situations the first 15 hours of remote interpreting cost one hour per three.

Tolkcontact
Yes: Insurer pays; employer €250/year excl. VAT

Every Dutch health insurer covers the app for deaf and hard of hearing people, with no eigen risico, most from 35 dB of hearing loss. Through an employer it costs €250 a year excl. VAT (the employer page says €20.66 a month per employee). Without interpreting hours a remote interpreter is billed at 130% of the normal rate; booking through Tolkcontact costs €82 per booking plus €81.61 an hour (excl. VAT, 2026).

Tolkcontact
Yes, requested; BSN and proof of deafness

You request an account at tolkcontact.nl/app, or activate it with one click if you have mijn.tolkcontact.nl through UWV interpreting hours. The application asks for name, address, date of birth and citizen service number (BSN), and the insurer needs proof of deafness such as an audiogram or a GP's letter.

Tolkcontact
Partly: NGT, NmG and Dutch

Group conversationsCaptio AI
Partly: One phone: speaker labels, names, direction

One phone captions the whole table and labels each speaker. On iPhone it can name people by their voice, and on iPhone 16 and later a wave shows which side a voice comes from. Shared folders let several people add recordings to one place; live captions are not joined across phones.

Sources: Apple App Store listing, Recognize voices (Captio AI) (Captio AI), Speaker direction (Captio AI) (Captio AI), Live Captions (Captio AI)

Tolkcontact
Partly: Schrijftolk writes who says what; video interpreting less suited

A writing interpreter's text shows what is said and by whom. Tolkcontact says remote interpreting suits meetings with many people less well, because the interpreter can't see who is talking.

Sources: What sign language and writing interpreters do (Tolkcontact), Tolkcontact app FAQ

Shows who is talkingCaptio AI
Yes, live and saved; names by voice on iPhone

Separates speakers (Speaker 1, Speaker 2). On iPhone it can learn saved voices and show their names instead.

Sources: Apple App Store listing, Recognize voices (Captio AI) (Captio AI), Live Captions (Captio AI)

Tolkcontact
Partly: A schrijftolk writes who says what

Writing interpreters write who said each thing. The app itself shows no speaker labels; it connects you to people.

Remembers people's voicesCaptio AI
Yes, Recognize Voices (iPhone)

Save someone's voice once (about 20 seconds of talking, or an audio file) and their name and emoji show on every line they say, live and in saved recordings, instead of "Speaker 2". Voiceprints are made on the iPhone and never uploaded. When someone new talks for a while, Captio AI asks who it is. Free plan: your own voice plus one other person; Plus: more people.

Shows where a voice comes fromCaptio AI
Yes, on iPhone 16 and later

With the iPhone flat on the table, a wave grows at the edge of the captions on the side the voice comes from, in that speaker's colour, while new words appear. It uses the iPhone's spatial microphones (not AirPods or an external mic), works in Live Captions and Live Translator, is calculated on the phone, and is free.

Alerts for soundsCaptio AI
Yes, sounds in the captions; alerts vibrate

Recognize Sounds (iPhone and iPad) writes sounds into the captions where they happen, like [doorbell rings], in Live Captions, Live Translator and uploaded files. A doorbell, knocking, a smoke alarm, a siren, a phone ringing or a baby crying makes the phone vibrate, with a notification when the screen is locked during a recording. It works while Captio AI is recording, not as an always-on alarm. Recognized on the phone; free; not on Android yet.

Tolkcontact
Partly: A schrijftolk describes sounds in the text

Writing interpreters type what can be heard around you, such as a phone beeping or someone sneezing. Tolkcontact's pages mention no sound alerts in the app.

Saves transcriptsCaptio AI
Yes, with audio, synced

Recordings are saved with their audio in a searchable library and synced to your account.

Tolkcontact
No, sessions may not be recorded

Interpreters have a professional code and a duty of confidentiality, and you may not record a Tolk op afstand session without Tolkcontact's explicit permission.

Live captions without internetCaptio AI
Partly: Records offline, captions later

Live captions need internet. Without a connection it keeps recording and transcribes automatically when the phone is back online.

Every service in the app is a live connection to a person, and Tolkcontact says the app needs Wi-Fi or mobile internet.

Key differences

What actually sets them apart

Who pays for the Tolkcontact app?

Usually your health insurer. Every Dutch insurer covers the app for deaf and hard of hearing people, most from 35 dB of hearing loss, with no eigen risico; through an employer it is €250 a year excl. VAT. Interpreters are paid from UWV interpreting hours. Nothing public stands behind Captio AI: beyond its 100 free credits a day, you'd pay for Plus yourself, US$14.99 monthly or US$79.99 yearly as listed on the US App Store in October 2026.

Can I get a schrijftolk through the Tolkcontact app?

Not on the spot. The app's remote interpreting is sign language only; a writing interpreter is booked in advance through mijn.tolkcontact.nl and then types everything said onto a tablet, in person or by video. Captio AI shows automatic text the moment you open it, without a booking, but no person writes or checks it.

Sources: Tolkcontact app FAQ, Tolk op afstand (remote interpreter) in the app (Tolkcontact), Booking a writing interpreter (schrijftolk) (Tolkcontact), Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI)

How long can I use Tolk op afstand?

Up to 20 minutes per conversation, every day from 7:00 to 22:00, as often as you need; for longer talks Tolkcontact asks you to book an interpreter beforehand. Captio AI has no opening hours: the free plan stops at 100 free credits a day, and Captio AI Plus unlocks unlimited live captions.

Does Captio AI work in Dutch?

Yes. Captio AI captions Dutch conversations live (see captioai.app/dutch) and translates to and from 60+ languages. Tolkcontact's interpreters work in NGT, Sign Supported Dutch and spoken Dutch, and in another language only if the interpreter agrees.

Can Captio AI make phone calls like KPN Teletolk?

No. KPN Teletolk, inside the Tolkcontact app, relays calls by text 24 hours a day and in sign language from 7:00 to 22:00, free, with your own 085 number. Captio AI doesn't caption phone or video calls, so the two do different jobs.

Which one shows who is speaking, and the sounds in the room?

Both, in different ways. A schrijftolk types who said what and notes sounds such as a phone beeping, the way subtitles for the deaf do. Captio AI does the same job without a person: every speaker gets a label, and on iPhone and iPad a knock or a doorbell is written into the text in brackets where it happened.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tolkcontact app free?

For most deaf and hard of hearing people in the Netherlands, yes: every health insurer pays the subscription, with no eigen risico, usually from 35 dB of hearing loss. Calls through KPN Teletolk and to 112 are free, and Tolk op afstand uses your UWV interpreting hours. Captio AI's own free tier is 100 free credits a day of captions; past that, an employer or school can buy licences for its deaf and hard of hearing people, or you take Captio AI Plus (US$79.99 a year on the US App Store, October 2026).

How do I get interpreting hours (tolkuren) from UWV?

You apply at UWV, which decides how many hours you get; for private situations it is 30 hours a year (168 if deafblind), requested once and then renewed automatically, and a first request needs an audiogram. UWV then creates your account on mijn.tolkcontact.nl. Captio AI needs no application: you install it and start captioning.

What do I need to sign up for the Tolkcontact app?

An application at tolkcontact.nl/app with your name, address, date of birth and citizen service number (BSN), plus proof of deafness such as an audiogram or a GP's letter for the insurer, unless you already have UWV interpreting hours. Captio AI asks for none of this: sign in with Apple or Google, or skip.

Can I call 112 with the Tolkcontact app?

Yes. The 112 button calls the emergency centre straight away; you speak or type, the operator always answers in text, and your live location is shared. For 112 in sign language, call through KPN Teletolk between 7:00 and 22:00. Captio AI can't call 112 or anyone else.

Is a schrijftolk or Captio AI better for a job interview?

For a planned interview, a booked schrijftolk gives you a trained person who writes everything said, who said it and the sounds in the room, paid from UWV interpreting hours if you have them. Captio AI is automatic: useful when no interpreter is free, and it keeps the recording so you can reread the questions afterwards.

Can I use Tolk op afstand in a meeting at work?

For short meetings and one-to-one talks of up to 20 minutes, yes. Tolkcontact says remote interpreting suits meetings with many people less well, because the interpreter can't see who is speaking, and suggests booking an interpreter for longer ones. Captio AI captions the whole meeting from one phone and labels each speaker, by name on iPhone for people whose voices you saved.

Can I use the Tolkcontact app on holiday abroad?

Tolk op afstand works anywhere in Europe, Tolkcontact says, but it isn't sure about outside Europe, and its interpreters are Dutch. Captio AI works wherever you have internet and translates live between 60+ languages, from a market in Spain to a museum in Germany.
