Where speech is processedCaptio AI
Yes: Cloud; audio not stored on its servers

Speech is processed by third-party speech recognition after you agree. Audio is not stored on Captio AI's servers; content is never sold or used to train AI models.

Rime
Yes: On the phone; nothing sent or saved

Speech recognition (Apple's, on the iPhone) and translation run on the phone. Audio is not recorded, stored or sent, there is no analytics or tracking, and the App Store privacy label says no data is collected.

Live captions without internetCaptio AI
Partly: Records offline, captions later

Live captions need internet. Without a connection it keeps recording and transcribes automatically when the phone is back online.

Sources: Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI)

Rime
Yes, after a one-time download

Captions use Apple's speech recognition on the iPhone. The first time, the iPhone downloads the language model (and the translation model if you translate); after that Rime doesn't go online.

Saves transcriptsCaptio AI
Yes, with audio, synced

Recordings are saved with their audio in a searchable library and synced to your account.

Rime
No, text is gone when you close the app

Nothing from the conversation is saved: the text disappears when you close the app. Rime only remembers settings such as text size and listening range.

Group conversationsCaptio AI
Partly: One phone: speaker labels, names, direction

One phone captions the whole table and labels each speaker. On iPhone it can name people by their voice, and on iPhone 16 and later a wave shows which side a voice comes from. Shared folders let several people add recordings to one place; live captions are not joined across phones.

Rime
Partly: Listening range: close, table or room

In settings you choose how far Rime listens: only the person sitting close, the whole table or everything in the room. Its pages don't describe telling speakers apart.

Shows who is talkingCaptio AI
Yes, live and saved; names by voice on iPhone

Separates speakers (Speaker 1, Speaker 2). On iPhone it can learn saved voices and show their names instead.

Remembers people's voicesCaptio AI
Yes, Recognize Voices (iPhone)

Save someone's voice once (about 20 seconds of talking, or an audio file) and their name and emoji show on every line they say, live and in saved recordings, instead of "Speaker 2". Voiceprints are made on the iPhone and never uploaded. When someone new talks for a while, Captio AI asks who it is. Free plan: your own voice plus one other person; Plus: more people.

Shows where a voice comes fromCaptio AI
Yes, on iPhone 16 and later

With the iPhone flat on the table, a wave grows at the edge of the captions on the side the voice comes from, in that speaker's colour, while new words appear. It uses the iPhone's spatial microphones (not AirPods or an external mic), works in Live Captions and Live Translator, is calculated on the phone, and is free.

Rime
Not stated

Rime lets you set how far it listens, but doesn't describe showing where a voice comes from.

Alerts for soundsCaptio AI
Yes, sounds in the captions; alerts vibrate

Recognize Sounds (iPhone and iPad) writes sounds into the captions where they happen, like [doorbell rings], in Live Captions, Live Translator and uploaded files. A doorbell, knocking, a smoke alarm, a siren, a phone ringing or a baby crying makes the phone vibrate, with a notification when the screen is locked during a recording. It works while Captio AI is recording, not as an always-on alarm. Recognized on the phone; free; not on Android yet.

Key differences

What actually sets them apart

Does Rime send what I say to a server?

No. The speech recognition (Apple's, running on the iPhone) and the translation both stay on the phone, nothing is kept, and Apple's listing says the developer does not collect any data from the app. Captio AI asks before anything is sent, then captions in the cloud; audio is not stored on Captio AI's servers, and your recordings are never sold or used to train AI models.

Sources: Rime privacy policy (Bona), App Store listing (Denmark) (Apple App Store), Captio AI privacy policy

Does Rime work offline?

Yes, once the iPhone has downloaded the language model and, for translation, the translation model. Captio AI's Live Captions and Live Translator need a data connection; in a dead zone it still records, and the transcript arrives automatically once you're back in coverage.

Sources: Rime privacy policy (Bona), App Store listing (Denmark) (Apple App Store), Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI)

Can Rime caption languages other than Danish and English?

Not according to its pages. Rime listens for Danish, or for English if you switch Language spoken, and translates between the two line by line. Captio AI captions and translates 60+ languages and follows speech that switches language mid-sentence.

Sources: App Store listing (Denmark) (Apple App Store), Rime website (Bona), Rime privacy policy (Bona), Apple App Store listing, Live Captions (Captio AI), Live Translator (Captio AI)

Can I read a Rime conversation again later?

No. By design Rime keeps nothing: the text disappears when you close the app. Captio AI stores every recording along with its audio, synced to your account, and can turn it into an AI Summary, key points or to-dos.

Sources: Rime privacy policy (Bona), App Store listing (Denmark) (Apple App Store), Apple App Store listing, Captio AI privacy policy, AI Summary (Captio AI)

Does Rime work on Android or an iPhone without iOS 26?

No. Rime only installs on iPhones running iOS 26 or later, and no Google Play listing was found. Captio AI goes back to iOS 15.1 on iPhone and is on Google Play for Android.

Sources: App Store listing (Denmark) (Apple App Store), Rime website (Bona), App Store data (Denmark) (Apple), Apple App Store listing, Google Play listing

Can Rime show who is speaking?

Its pages don't describe speaker labels; its answer to a crowded room is a listening range, from the person close to you to the whole room. Captio AI starts a new tagged line for each speaker, and Recognize Voices on iPhone turns a saved voice into a name such as "Far", from a voiceprint that is made and kept on the iPhone.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Rime really free?

Yes, completely: the Danish App Store shows no in-app purchases, and there is no account, no ads and no tracking. Captio AI's free plan stops at 100 free credits a day; to go past it, Captio AI Plus is US$14.99 a month, or US$79.99 for twelve months, in the US App Store (October 2026), with no free trial.

What is a hørebrille?

It is Rime's own word for itself, "like reading glasses, but for conversations": what people around you say appears as large text on your iPhone. Captio AI does that job with Live Captions on iPhone, iPad and Android, in 60+ languages.

Can Rime translate English to Danish at work?

Yes. Pick Danish as the language you read and set Language spoken to English, and Rime translates line by line on the iPhone, offline after a one-time download. Captio AI's Live Translator does the same pair online, plus any direction among its 60+ languages, and its two-way mode gives you and an English-speaking colleague a side each.

Can I use Rime in a lecture at a Danish university?

Rime can be set to listen to everything in the room, but its text is gone when you close the app, so there is nothing to revise from later. Captio AI keeps captioning with the iPhone screen locked, saves the lecture and can turn it into key points.

Can Rime listen only to the person next to me in a noisy café?

Yes, that is Rime's listening range setting: the person sitting close, the whole table or everything in the room. Captio AI captions everyone the phone picks up and tags each speaker; Speaker Direction, on an iPhone 16 or later placed flat on the café table, shows which way to turn.

Is there a Rime app for iPad?

No, the App Store lists Rime for iPhone only. Captio AI has a full iPad app, where Live Captions fill the whole screen.

Can Rime hear a doorbell or a smoke alarm?

Rime's pages only talk about speech. While Captio AI is recording, Recognize Sounds (iPhone and iPad) notes a doorbell, a smoke alarm or a crying baby in the text, for example as [doorbell rings], and buzzes the phone for those alerts; once the recording stops, it stops listening.

Is Rime available outside Denmark?

Not so far: of the App Stores checked in November 2026, including the US, UK, German, Swedish and Norwegian ones, only the Danish store had it. Captio AI can be downloaded worldwide from the App Store and Google Play, priced per country.
